Full job description

Quantum is now, and it's built here.

Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve. Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.

IonQ, Inc. [NYSE: IONQ] is the world’s leading quantum company delivering solutions to solve the world’s most complex problems. IonQ’s newest generation quantum computers, IonQ Tempo and IonQ Forte Enterprise, are the latest in cutting-edge systems that have been helping customers and partners such as Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA achieve 20x performance results. The company achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a world record in quantum computing performance in 2025.

The company is accelerating its technology roadmap and intends to deliver the world’s most powerful quantum computers with 2 million qubits by 2030 to accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. IonQ’s advancements in quantum networking position the company as a leader in building the quantum internet.

What to expect:

We are seeking an Electrical & Electronics Technician to join our technical team and play a key role in the company's continued growth and development.

This is a hands-on position within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team working across advanced computing, engineering, and scientific research.

The successful candidate will contribute to the build, integration, and development of our state-of-the-art quantum computing platforms and associated infrastructure. Working closely with engineers, scientists, and technicians across multiple disciplines, you will help deliver new systems, upgrade existing platforms, and enable ongoing research activity.

This position is ideally suited to a practical and versatile technician with electrical and electronic assembly skills, a methodical approach to problem-solving, and experience working with complex technical equipment. The role offers the opportunity to work on novel technologies in a collaborative environment where technical expertise, initiative, and attention to detail are highly valued.

What you'll be responsible for:

Assembly, integration, and testing of electrical and electronic subsystems used in advanced computing and scientific equipment, alongside electrical wiring, cable preparation, connector assembly, and installation of low-voltage electrical systems.

Assembly of precision mechanical and electronic components, including PCB-based assemblies, while working from engineering drawings, schematics, assembly instructions, and technical documentation.

  • Producing and maintaining build records, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Supporting prototype development, system upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborating with mechanical, optics, software, and science teams to deliver integrated systems.
  • Maintaining a safe, organised, and efficient laboratory and workshop environment.

3+ years' experience in an engineering, scientific, or technical environment, with experience assembling, integrating, and testing electrical and electronic systems.

Basic electrical and electronic fault-finding skills, including the use of standard test equipment, alongside the ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.

Experience assembling high-precision or delicate components and assemblies, with practical experience of electronic hardware including PCB-based assemblies and soldering.

  • Experience working within laboratory, workshop, or other controlled technical environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and a structured approach to assembly and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks.

You'd be a great fit with:

  • Experience with surface-mount and through-hole assembly and rework.
  • Experience working with scientific instrumentation, research hardware, or other high-technology systems.
  • Experience with vacuum systems, vacuum assemblies, or ultra-high-vacuum environments.
  • Experience supporting prototype development, commissioning, or low-volume manufacturing.
  • Previous experience within a research organisation, advanced manufacturing environment, technology company, or start-up.
  • Relevant technical qualifications in electronics, electrical engineering, engineering technology, or a related discipline.

Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role, you’ll join a world-class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.

We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.

Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.

We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
