Full job description

Join the leader in entertainment innovation and help us design the future. At Dolby, science meets art, and high tech means more than computer code. As a member of the Dolby team, you’ll see and hear the results of your work everywhere, from movie theaters to smartphones. We continue to revolutionize how people create, deliver, and enjoy entertainment worldwide. To do that, we need the absolute best talent. We’re big enough to give you all the resources you need, and small enough so you can make a real difference and earn recognition for your work. We offer a collegial culture, challenging projects, and excellent compensation and benefits.

For this high functioning team, the nature of the work benefits from frequent in-office presence, and employees may be expected to work from a company office up to four days per week. While we remain committed to flexibility, this team’s rhythm includes regular in-person connection to support collaboration, learning, and impact.

The Legal Department provides core legal support to all Dolby functions, runs several IP-centric businesses, and leads government relations.

The Director of Intelligence, Data, and Modeling – Legal & Patent Licensing is a leadership role responsible for building and operationalizing an end-to-end intelligence, analytics, and modeling capability foundational to Dolby’s Patent Licensing and IP Protection strategy. This role extends beyond traditional analytics to include market intelligence, economic and royalty modeling, scenario planning, and AI-enabled decision support across bilateral and pool-based licensing programs.

This position will drive and evolve a multi-year intelligence and analytics roadmap for the Legal, IP Protection, and Patent Licensing organization—translating complex market dynamics, incomplete data, and legal frameworks into clear, actionable insights. The role serves as a key connector across licensing strategy, legal, finance, and data engineering, ensuring data is accurate, accessible, and actionable.

This role is responsible for communicating the business impact of data transformation efforts, demonstrating value through measurable outcomes, and supporting adoption of advanced analytics and AI across the licensing lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities

Intelligence, Data & Analytics Strategy

  • Define and deliver the data, intelligence, and analytics roadmap for Legal and Patent Licensing, aligned with long-term licensing growth and portfolio objectives
  • Establish an intelligence framework integrating market data, licensee data, financial outcomes, patent assets, and external signals to enable informed decision-making
  • Prioritize analytics investments by balancing speed, rigor, and business impact in evolving environments

Market Intelligence & Competitive Analysis

  • Lead the aggregation and analysis of global market intelligence across relevant industries (e.g., audio, video, consumer electronics, automotive, and emerging device ecosystems)
  • Develop models that translate technology adoption and licensing dynamics into forecastable business opportunities
  • Monitor competitive and ecosystem developments, including standards evolution, patent pools, and enforcement trends

Economic, Royalty & Scenario Modeling

  • Design and continuously improve economic and royalty models supporting licensing agreements, patent pools, enforcement scenarios, and new program development
  • Build scenario-based forecasting models evaluating a range of outcomes based on varying assumptions
  • Partner with Finance and Licensing teams to ensure models support decision-making and long-term planning

AI, Advanced Analytics & Decision Support

  • Lead the application of AI and machine learning to legal and licensing use cases (e.g., compliance risk, forecasting, workflow automation)
  • Identify and pilot high-impact use cases and support transition from experimentation to practical application

Data Infrastructure, Engineering & Visualization

  • Oversee the design and evolution of data pipelines, models, and analytics platforms supporting Legal and Patent Licensing
  • Promote data quality, transparency, and governance aligned with legal and compliance standards
  • Enable development of clear, executive-ready dashboards and visualizations

Strategic Partnership & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., IP Protection, Patent Licensing, Legal Operations, Finance, Technology Standards) to align analytics with business priorities
  • Translate analytical outputs into clear, accessible insights for diverse stakeholders
  • Support development of a high-performing team spanning analytics, data engineering, and market intelligence

Impact Communication & Change Leadership

  • Communicate the business impact of data and intelligence initiatives with clear linkage to outcomes and risk management
  • Support adoption of data-informed decision-making across licensing and legal workflows

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related quantitative field

Experience

  • Experience leading analytics, intelligence, or modeling functions in patent licensing, intellectual property, legal, finance, or related environments
  • Experience synthesizing market data in technology-driven industries
  • Experience developing and maintaining economic or royalty models
  • Ability to engage effectively with cross-functional and senior stakeholders

Technical Skills

  • Experience with Databricks and business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python for data analysis and modeling
  • Experience working with large, complex datasets

Core Capabilities

  • Ability to translate complex analytics into clear, actionable insights
  • Comfort working with evolving or incomplete data
  • Ability to collaborate and influence across teams and functions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with FRAND licensing principles, standards-essential patents, or patent pool environments
  • Experience applying predictive analytics to technology adoption or licensing scenarios
  • Background in management consulting, strategy, or analytics transformation

Leadership Competencies

  • Strategic Thinking in Uncertainty: Sets direction while navigating evolving information

We're the rain on the roof in a movie. The music flowing through your earbuds when you're at the gym. The footsteps lurking behind you in a video game. The voice of a colleague on a call who seems to be right next to you. The sight of a breathtakingly bright and vivid sunset on your TV. Making experiences come alive through technology is what we do. It's been our mission since day one. It began with our founder, Ray Dolby, a visionary scientist and inventor. As a young engineer and music lover, he was driven to improve the listening experience. And with that simple motivation, plus countless hours of experimentation, he created a solution—a solution that was elegant and practical, highly sophisticated, and wholly devoted to the artist's vision. Even as we've become a global company, Dolby Laboratories continues to reflect Ray Dolby's values. Here, science meets art. And high tech goes far beyond computer code. Founded in 1965 and headquartered in San Francisco, Dolby has grown into a leading global innovator and developer of audio, imaging and voice technologies for cinema, home theaters, PCs, mobile phones, and games. Our products include Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, Dolby Voice, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Today, over 2,000 individuals around the globe share their talents and energy to enable the most immersive experiences that technology can deliver.
