Job Description

Nurse Practitioner On Call LLC provides psychiatric and mental health services across Maryland. We are seeking a detail-oriented Front Desk to serve as the first point of contact for patients and referral sources. This role is central to patient access, scheduling, and the accurate verification of insurance benefits. The ideal candidate brings behavioral health intake experience and a strong working knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance verification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist patients and callers professionally, in person and by phone, maintaining a calm and supportive presence appropriate to a behavioral health setting.
  • Verify patient eligibility and benefits for Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial payers prior to appointments.
  • Confirm behavioral health coverage details, including copays, deductibles, coinsurance, prior authorization requirements, visit limits, and telehealth/mobile-service coverage.
  • Obtain and document prior authorizations and referrals as required by each payer.
  • Schedule, confirm, and reschedule appointments; manage provider calendars and coordinate mobile-visit logistics.
  • Collect, verify, and accurately enter demographic and insurance information into the practice management/EHR system.
  • Communicate patient financial responsibility clearly and collect copays and balances at time of service.
  • Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Coordinate with billing staff to resolve eligibility discrepancies and reduce claim denials.
  • Support referral intake from hospitals, primary care providers, and community partners.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's degree preferred).
  • Minimum 2 years of front desk/patient access experience in a healthcare setting; behavioral health or psychiatric experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of insurance verification for Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance plans.
  • Familiarity with Maryland Medicaid managed care organizations and behavioral health benefit structures.
  • Working knowledge of prior authorization and referral processes.
  • Proficiency with EHR/practice management systems and standard office software.
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
  • Demonstrated discretion and professionalism handling sensitive patient information (HIPAA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a mental health or psychiatric practice.
  • Experience with telehealth or mobile-service scheduling.
  • Bilingual (Spanish or other) a plus.
  • Familiarity with eligibility portals (e.g., Carelon, Availity, Novitasphere, NaviNet).

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Office-based role with prolonged periods of sitting and computer/phone use.
  • Fast-paced environment requiring frequent multitasking and interaction with patients in varying emotional states.

Our team of Nurse Practitioners have decades of experience and are able to provide telephonic management of acute and chronic signs and symptoms. They are able to discern a diagnosis quickly and accurately using evidence-based practice models in delivering safe, quality, effective care. They are able to prescribe appropriate medications and advise follow-up. They can evaluate and refer to the facility of your choice if emergent care is warranted. While nurse triage call centers have been the mainstay of triage services, it still has not afforded physicians and midlevels the peace of mind and quality of life they long for. Because nurses cannot diagnose, order, or prescribe, they often have to call on the physicians they cover to complete the calls, interrupting them at all hours of the night. Nurse Practitioner OnCall also provides board-certified M.D. supervision for all on-duty NPs. AT LONG LAST... Physicians and their supporting providers can have total relief, enjoying peaceful nights, weekends, and holidays while our NPs are on duty to answer the most difficult health situations.
