Responsibilities

The Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. They also conduct safety training, perform site audits, investigate incidents, and manage emergency response planning to mitigate organizational risk.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree or at least ten years of safety and management experience in construction or heavy equipment operations. Strong knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and safety management systems is required, along with excellent communication and leadership abilities.

Position Summary

The Safety Specialist is responsible for the development, training and implementation of all Federal, State, Local, Manufacturer and Corporate safety policies, practices and procedures; provides technical support to shop/field personnel to manage risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Develop and Implement Safety Policies:
    • Work with the Safety Director to formulate, update, and enforce safety policies and procedures in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  1. Assist in the development of AHA, THA, Critical Lift, Spill Prevention, Environmental, and Site Audit Plans.
  2. Ensure that safety policies align with industry best practices and standards.
  3. Enforce strategic Safety directives to our entire labor force—Union and Non-Union, Executives and Non-Executives. 
  4. Assist in managing the safety culture for the entire organization, starting with proper use of PPE for all employees, vendors and/or customers.
  5. Partner with the Safety Director to maintain protocol for claims management, clinics, and Return to Duty.
  • Training and Education:
    • Conduct safety training programs for employees, including crane operators and support staff. May also conduct training for vendors and customers.
    • Stay informed about industry advancements and update training materials accordingly.
    • Actively assist in leading safety committees as appropriate.
  1. Attend workshops and continuing education classes approved in advance by the CEO.
  • Inspections and Audits:
    • Perform regular job walks and safety audits.
    • Perform regular safety inspections of equipment, facilities, and work sites to identify and address potential hazards.
    • Conduct internal safety audits and coordinate external audits as necessary.
  1. Ensure all site activities, facilities and job sites are in compliance with current health, safety and Environmental regulations.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Stay current with safety regulations and ensure company compliance.
    • Interface with regulatory agencies and maintain records of inspections and regulatory correspondence.
  1. Manage and maintain programs, logs and files for the storage, classification, and identification (MSDS/SDS) of hazardous chemicals, liquids and solids stored at facilities and job sites.
  2. Assist in the maintenance of the safety and security programs for shop equipment including but not limited to shackles, slings, spreader bars, FAA lights and guards.
  • Incident Investigation:
    • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions. Take steps to fully process incidents both internally and externally, including managing all incurred injuries to a successful conclusion.
  1. Provide timely 0-60 notifications to Executive Team for all incidents regardless of the severity of the incident.
  2. Prepare detailed incident reports and maintain accurate records.
  3. Develop recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrence.
  • Emergency Response Planning:
    • Develop and implement emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and first aid protocols.
    • Conduct regular drills to ensure preparedness.

 

  • Safety Communication:
    • Foster a culture of safety through effective communication.
    • Conduct regular safety meetings and disseminate relevant safety information.

 

  • Safety Performance Metrics:
    • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance.
    • Analyze data and trends to identify areas for improvement.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

Education & Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or a minimum of ten years of safety and management experience in construction or heavy equipment operations required.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

  • Knowledge:
    • Regulatory Compliance: Understanding of local, state, and federal safety regulations.
    • Industry-specific Knowledge: Familiarity with crane operations and industry-specific safety challenges.
    • Occupational Health and Safety Standards: Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and other relevant safety codes.
    • Emergency Response: Understanding of emergency response procedures and plan development.
    • Safety Management Systems: Knowledge of safety management systems and their integration.
    • Risk Assessment: Proficiency in conducting risk assessments and identifying hazards.
  • Skills:
    • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication for effective safety communication.
    • Training and Education: Ability to develop and deliver safety training programs.
    • Computer: Skilled in computer usage and knowledge of integrated computer systems and software relevant to the performance of primary areas of responsibility.
    • Investigation Skills: Skill in investigating accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
    • Auditing and Inspection: Competence in safety audits and inspections.
    • Data Analysis: Ability to analyze safety performance data and identify areas for improvement.
  • Abilities:
    • Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate teams to prioritize safety.
    • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to address safety challenges.
    • Emergency Response Coordination: Ability to coordinate and manage emergency response efforts.
    • Decision-Making: Sound judgment and decision-making, especially in high-pressure situations.
    • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing safety regulations and organizational needs.
