Full job description
Sinai Health is looking for an experienced laboratory professional with proven frontline leadership experience to join our team as a Supervisor, Microbiology. As laboratory services continue to evolve through advances in diagnostic technologies, automation, quality systems, and service integration, you will play a key role in ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality microbiology services. Working closely with the Senior Manager, Chief Microbiologist, Charge Technologists, and frontline staff, you will support daily operations, staff development, quality initiatives, and continuous improvement activities that directly contribute to patient care. This is an opportunity to apply your operational leadership skills in a fast-paced, complex laboratory environment while supporting innovation, service excellence, and a culture of collaboration.
Is this you? Collaborative leadership is one of your strengths, especially when it means supporting frontline teams and keeping laboratory operations running at their best. You understand the demands of a high-volume microbiology environment and bring the balance of priorities that setting requires, from patient care and operational efficiency to quality standards and staff engagement. At the core of this leadership style is a commitment to quality that connects your day-to-day decisions to meaningful outcomes for patients, physicians, and clinical teams across the organization.
As a trusted resource, you provide day-to-day guidance and coaching to staff with consistency and intention. You foster a positive and respectful workplace where teamwork, accountability, and continuous learning are expectations. Helping staff develop their capabilities is something you pursue with genuine investment, always alongside a clear commitment to performance expectations. The result is a staff that feels supported, equipped, and motivated to deliver on the standards the laboratory depends on.
Managing competing operational priorities and resolving challenges in real time are areas where you demonstrate consistent confidence and composure. Whether coordinating staffing adjustments, addressing workflow bottlenecks, or working through technical and procedural issues, you bring a solutions-focused mindset to every situation. Backed by strong organizational skills and close attention to detail, you keep laboratory operations on course and deliver reliable outcomes for the patients and clinical teams who count on them.
About this team: As a collaborative laboratory operation between Mount Sinai Hospital and the University Health Network (UHN), the Department of Microbiology stands as a beacon of excellence, both locally and nationally. Each year, our team conducts over 700,000 tests for a diverse range of patients, including both inpatients and outpatients, underscoring our critical role in patient care and public health.
Driven by innovation, we offer the full range of high quality microbiology services, from routine cultures and susceptibility testing to molecular diagnostic testing. New assays are continually being developed by our medical and scientific staff in response to clinical and research needs. We offer state-of-the-art diagnostic services, methods development, research, and education. We are a prime reference center for both hospital and private sector laboratories.
In this role you will:
Supervise day-to-day laboratory operations across assigned microbiology service areas, coordinating workflow, staffing assignments, and workload distribution to ensure efficient, safe, and responsive service delivery
Monitor turnaround times, workload indicators, productivity measures, and operational performance metrics while identifying opportunities to improve workflow, efficiency, and service quality
Provide operational leadership, coaching, mentoring, and ongoing guidance to technical, clerical, and support staff while promoting a positive, collaborative, and respectful work environment
Support staff onboarding, orientation, training, competency assessment, and cross-training activities to enhance operational flexibility and professional development
Coordinate short-term staffing adjustments, arrange coverage for absences, monitor staffing pressures and overtime utilization, and support implementation of staffing schedules developed by the Senior Manager
Serve as a resource for operational, technical, and procedural issues and collaborate with Charge Technologists to address and resolve daily operational concerns
Support implementation of new equipment, methodologies, tests, laboratory information system enhancements, and workflow improvements in collaboration with laboratory leadership and stakeholders
Ensure compliance with quality management systems, accreditation standards, laboratory policies, biosafety requirements, infection prevention and control standards, and occupational health and safety requirements
Monitor quality control and quality assurance activities, support audit preparation and accreditation activities, and assist with inspections conducted by Accreditation Canada, Health Canada, and other governing bodies as applicable
Support the investigation, documentation, and follow-up of quality and safety incidents, including SAFER reporting, corrective actions, and process improvement initiatives
Assist with implementation and monitoring of departmental policies, procedures, standard operating procedures, and best practices approved by laboratory leadership
Monitor operational resources including supplies, reagents, consumables, staffing, and overtime utilization while supporting inventory management, procurement activities, and vendor coordination
Assist with collection, analysis, and reporting of operational, quality, workload, productivity, and service data to support departmental performance monitoring and decision-making
Collaborate with physicians, clinicians, laboratory leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to support effective service delivery and achieve organizational objectives
Participate in professional development, teaching, educational activities, quality improvement initiatives, committees, and working groups to support service excellence
Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
Job Requirements: Mandatory
Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
3 years of recent microbiology laboratory experience
Demonstrated leadership experience as a Charge Technologist, Lead Technologist, Acting Supervisor, or equivalent frontline leadership role
Preferred
Experience working in a unionized healthcare environment
Experience supporting implementation of new laboratory technologies, methodologies, equipment, or process improvement initiatives
Previous formal supervisory or people leadership experience
Skills and Knowledge
Strong knowledge of microbiology laboratory operations, quality management systems, accreditation standards and regulatory requirements
Strong understanding of accreditation requirements, quality assurance processes, quality control programs, and continuous quality improvement methodologies
Effective leadership, coaching, mentoring, and conflict resolution skills
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
