Full job description

Who We Are: MassDevelopment, Massachusetts’ premier development finance agency and land bank, collaborates with businesses, nonprofits, financial institutions, and municipalities to catalyze economic growth across the Commonwealth. As part of our work, we play a critical role in the redevelopment of Devens, transforming it into a dynamic, mixed-use community that fosters innovation and sustainable growth. Our mission is anchored in three core pillars: driving business innovation, accelerating economic development, and empowering communities. Rooted in the principles of access, equity, and inclusion, we are committed to fostering a thriving, resilient economy.

Make an Impact with Us!

At Devens Fire Department, we are seeking dedicated Firefighter/EMTs (paramedic preferred) who are passionate about making a meaningful impact in our community. In this vital role, you'll respond to a diverse range of emergencies, including structural fires, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, and participate in daily trainings. You’ll operate firefighting equipment, conduct safety inspections, and participate in community education efforts on fire prevention. We are looking for individuals who thrive under pressure, maintain composure in high-stress situations, and work seamlessly within a supportive, highly skilled team. Preferred candidates with paramedic certification bring valuable expertise in emergency medical care, enhancing our ability to provide pre-hospital care. If you're ready to bring your skills, qualifications, and dedication to protecting and serving our community, we invite you to join our mission.

Why You'll Love Working Here

We're proud to offer a modern, forward-thinking environment where innovation and safety come first. Join a department that stands out with:

  • A brand-new public safety building
  • A state-of-the-art ambulance
  • PFAS-free turnout gear for improved health and safety

Be a part of a team that invests in its people, equipment, and future.

Schedule: 5 Openings | 24-Hour Shift Rotation — 24 Hours On, 72 Hours Off

What You’ll Do

  • Respond to a variety of emergencies – From structural fires, brush fires, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue, and fire prevention activities.
  • Drive and operate emergency equipment – Including engine companies, ladder companies, water tankers, ambulance and support vehicles.
  • Conduct fire safety inspections – Assess facilities and environments for potential fire hazards, ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations and implementing necessary corrections.
  • Educate the public – Participate in fire prevention and assist fire unit with safety education programs, empowering the community with knowledge to reduce risks and stay safe.

What We’re Looking For

If you’re ready to join our team, here’s what we’re looking for:

  • EMT-B Certification – A valid EMT-Basic certification from Massachusetts is required for this role.
  • Residency – You must live within 15 miles of Devens or be willing to relocate within one year of employment.
  • Qualifications – Firefighter I/II Pro-Board certification; paramedic certification (preferred)
  • Driver’s License – A valid Massachusetts driver’s license is required to operate fire department vehicles.
  • Education – A high school diploma or equivalent is required. An associate or bachelor’s degree in fire science is preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Administrative & Computer Skills – Strong administrative and computer skills are essential, particularly experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Communication Skills – The ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions, while maintaining clear, professional communication in all situations, is key.
  • Team Player – We’re looking for someone who works well with others, builds positive relationships, and contributes to a strong, supportive team.
  • Bilingual (Nice to Have) – If you speak another language, that’s a bonus, but it’s not required.

What We Offer

We believe in taking care of our team, and as part of the Devens Fire Department, you'll receive a comprehensive benefits package that supports your health, well-being, and future:

  • Health Insurance – We provide excellent health coverage including medical, dental, and vision, to ensure you and your family are well taken care of.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) – Enjoy generous paid time off to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  • State Pension Participation – As a member of the Massachusetts state system, you'll participate in a secure pension plan to support your future.
  • Additional Benefits – Other benefits are available, offering further support for you and your family.

In addition to these core benefits, you'll have the opportunity to work in a dynamic, rewarding environment where your contributions make a meaningful impact on the community. Join us and experience a fulfilling career with great benefits.
