Job Summary

The Custom Sewing Specialist is responsible for creating custom wheelchair seating and positioning products to meet customer specifications and quality standards. This role requires advanced sewing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with a variety of fabrics, patterns, and specialty materials. The ideal candidate is passionate about craftsmanship and takes pride in producing a high-quality, custom-made products while maintaining efficiency and accuracy. 

Essential Functions

Job Responsibilities

  • Sew, fabricate, and assemble custom seating and positioning products according to customer specifications and design requirements. 
  • Read and interpret patterns, measurements, work orders, and technical instructions. 
  • Measure, mark, cut, and prepare fabrics and materials for production. 
  • Operate industrial sewing machines, embroidery equipment, and other sewing tools safely and efficiently. 
  • Inspect completed products to ensure accuracy, durability, and quality standards are met. 
  • Select appropriate fabrics and other materials for each work order. 
  • Maintain sewing equipment by performing routine cleaning and minor maintenance. 
  • Identify opportunities to improve production methods, efficiency, and product quality. 
  • Ensure and follow safety requirements and standards.
  • Adhere to Company’s quality and safety requirements. 
  • Maintain a safe, neat, and orderly work environment.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that follows, demonstrates, and promotes Company’s values. 
  • Report to work as scheduled, on time, and able to work entire work schedule.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

  • Highly proficient in operating sewing machines and understanding of sewing techniques. 
  • Knowledge of basic sewing machine troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Ability to accurately read measurements, patterns, blueprints, and work instructions. 
  • Ability to operate effectively under minimal supervision independently and withing a team environment. 
  • Skill and ability to pay attention to detail with a focus on quality.
  • Possess effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly adaptable and responsive to changing business needs.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to observe and identify details.
  • Ability to work extended hours as scheduled, including weekends.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. 
  • Continuous wrist/hand manipulation for precise, repetitive sewing tasks. 
  • Continuous wrist manipulation, walking, and standing.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting. 
  • Must be able to lift and handle fabric rolls. 
  • Frequent light work with lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasional medium work with lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to position product and to use of sewing equipment. 
  • Must be able to complete all physical requirements to perform essential functions.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Required:
    • 2+ years of experience professional sewing, tailoring, or upholstery experience. 
    • Experience and proven ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment. 
  • Preferred: 
    • Pattern modification or pattern-making experience. 
    • Experience working in a manufacturing environment. 
    • Experience working with hand tools and measuring tools. 

Working Environment

  • Standard working conditions include a temperature-controlled manufacturing environment.
