Job Title: Part Time Coordinator of Theater Performance

Department: Linda Berry Stein College of Art and Sciences, Fine Arts

Position Summary

 

The Coordinator of Theater Performance provides artistic, instructional, and production leadership for theater performance activities within the School of Fine Arts and

Humanities. This position teaches selected lower-level theater and performance courses, advises and mentors students engaged in theater activity, oversees the annual production calendar, and directs one or more productions each academic year. The Coordinator of

Theater Performance collaborates with Fine Arts leadership and colleagues in music, dance, and related areas to support student performance opportunities, course scheduling, and a vibrant performing arts environment at Jacksonville University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Teach six credits per semester in selected lower-level theater, performance, production, or related courses.
    • Provide artistic leadership for theater productions within the School of Fine Arts and Humanities.
    • Direct one or more productions each academic year, including the fall play and/or spring musical.
    • Participate in annual season selection in collaboration with Fine Arts leadership, the Coordinator of Vocal Performance, the Coordinator of Music Technology, and the Director of Dance.
    • Oversee auditions, casting, rehearsals, artistic preparation, and student performance development.
    • Collaborate with visiting artists, guest directors, music directors, choreographers, technical staff, and other production partners.
    • Support the fall play and spring musical through artistic oversight and collaborative production planning.
    • Mentor and advise students involved in vocal performance activities as assigned and in conjunction with their academic advisor.
    • Contribute to course schedule development in collaboration with Fine Arts leadership.
    • Support student recruitment and engagement in theater performance opportunities as appropriate.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues in music, dance, music technology, and related areas to support a strong and student-centered performing arts environment.
    • Participate in service to the School of Fine Arts and Humanities.
    • Maintain a flexible schedule that includes rehearsals, performances, auditions, and related events.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Demonstrated knowledge of theater rehearsal processes, auditions, casting, production preparation, and performance practice.
    • Ability to direct theater productions and support student performance development.
    • Ability to teach lower-level courses in theater, performance, acting, directing, musical theater, or related areas.
    • Ability to work effectively with undergraduate students with varied levels of preparation and experience.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with visiting artists, guest directors, technical staff, music directors, choreographers, and Fine Arts leadership.
    • Ability to support artistic planning while working within established production, budgetary, and facility structures.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively.
    • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered teaching, mentorship, artistic development, and performance preparation.
    • Ability to assess courses and student learning outcomes as required by the Institution.

Required Qualifications

    • Graduate degree in theater, theater performance, directing, acting, musical theater, drama, or a closely related field.
    • Collegiate teaching experience.
    • Experience directing theater productions.
    • Experience working with undergraduate students in instructional, rehearsal, or performance settings.

Preferred Qualifications

    • MFA or other relevant terminal degree.
    • Experience directing or supporting musical theater productions.
    • Experience with production planning, season planning, or collaborative performing arts programming.
    • Experience advising or mentoring undergraduate students.
    • Demonstrated professional experience as a director, performer, theater artist, or related creative professional.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has direct authority over the artistic aspects of assigned productions. The Coordinator of Theater Performance may coordinate the work of students, visiting artists, guest directors, performers, and other collaborators in consultation with Fine Arts

leadership. Technical, facility, budgetary, licensing, and production operations are managed in collaboration with the appropriate Fine Arts leadership and technical personnel.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and through virtual platforms.
  • Ability to read written communications and computer display screens.
  • Ability to participate in rehearsals, auditions, performances, and related events as needed.
  • Ability to move within rehearsal and performance spaces as required for directing and production activity.
