Introduction

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 170 Members (169 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 15 additional States in the process of accession. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource, and financial knowledge on renewable energy. The Agency implements its mandate with the view of sustainable development, increased energy security, and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. 

The IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) is one of the three programmatic division of the Agency and is hosted in Bonn, Germany. In close cooperation with the other IRENA divisions, its work on energy transformation covers, among others, the areas of renewable energy roadmaps, power system transformation, renewable energy project development, innovation, standards and quality assurance, as well as costing and competitiveness of renewables. IRENA aims to facilitate transformative improvement towards a resilient, sustainable, and low-emission energy transition in support of the Paris Agreement objectives.

Duties and responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, Renewable Energy Cost Status and Outlook, the Associate Programme Officer, Renewable Energy Cost Status and Outlook, will:

• Contribute to analysis of renewable energy costs and performance for power generation, technologies facilitating the energy transition (e.g., batteries) and technologies in the end-use sectors.
• Maintain the IRENA Renewable Cost Database on an ongoing basis, including verification and quality checks in accordance with established methodologies.
• Contribute to analytical work by gathering and compiling primary and secondary data, analysing the collected data, drafting technical sections of reports, and contributing to the report production review and engagement process.
• Apply cost models and scenario tools, including running sensitivity analyses and documenting assumptions.
• Analyse renewable energy supply chains, including wind energy supply chains and emerging value chains, by conducting background research and summarising findings.
• Prepare summaries, information sheets, PowerPoint presentations, and draft materials.
• Contribute to the organisation and conduct of expert meetings for data and analysis discussions and peer review; support engagement with partner organisations.
• Attend and support international fora, meetings and conferences as a member of the IRENA delegation.
• Coordinate the publications process of relevant costing publications, and knowledge management, as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Education: 

• Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in a field connected to renewable energy (e.g., engineering). A candidate with a first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A post-graduate degree or equivalent is desirable, as would a multidisciplinary background.

Experience/Skills: 

• One year of relevant professional or academic experience in the energy sector, demonstrating a keen interest in renewable energy technologies and/or energy economics.
• Strong quantitative and analytical aptitude, with familiarity with techno-economic and cost analysis of renewable energy projects, previous work experience in wind energy projects is a plus.
• Fundamental understanding of onshore and offshore wind technologies, including basic knowledge of technology design, performance trends, and regional deployment dynamics.
• Familiarity with storage technologies such as battery energy storage systems (BESS) , Hydrogen/Electrolyzers and hybrid renewable energy projects, with a focus on cost and performance metrics.
• Knowledge of renewable energy supply chains and value chain analysis. 
• Experience with data visualization platforms and tools is desirable, including the ability to communicate analytical results clearly to diverse audiences.
• Ability to draft clear technical content under supervision and contribute to analytical outputs.
• Experience working in or with international organizations and multicultural, international teams is considered an asset.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to a positive team environment.

Languages: 

• Excellent written and spoken English command is desirable. Other languages are a plus.
