The Senior Process Safety Engineer will lead process safety initiatives and ensure regulatory compliance with OSHA and EPA standards at the Toledo Refinery. They will also facilitate risk assessments, lead incident investigations, and drive continuous improvement of safety systems across the organization.
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry, science, or a safety-related discipline. A minimum of 8 years of experience in process safety or technical safety within the oil and gas or chemical industry is required.
Cenovus Energy is now seeking a Senior Process Safety Engineer to lead the process safety initiatives to support a zero-harm work environment by mitigating risk and coordinating with cross-functional stakeholders to address process safety issues at our Toledo Refinery.
Ensure regulatory compliance with U.S. process safety requirements, including OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA Risk Management Program (RMP)
Lead and support refinery process safety programs, providing technical safety and engineering expertise across PHA/HAZOP, LOPA, MAH, and Management of Change (MOC)
Drive continuous improvement of process safety systems, workflows, and assurance mechanisms to ensure consistent and effective implementation
Serve as a change agent, embedding process safety principles across the organization and influencing stakeholders at all levels
Lead or support incident investigations and root cause analyses, identifying lessons learned and preventing recurrence of major incidents
Coordinate and oversee audits (internal, third party, insurance), ensuring gap identification, tracking, and timely close out of corrective actions
Partner with site leadership and HSE leadership to identify and mitigate key risks, advance safety systems, and set, measure, and analyze occupational and process safety performance goals
Legally authorized to work in the US
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Chemistry, Science, or Safety/Environmental discipline
8+ years experience in process engineering, technical safety, or process safety engineering in oil and gas or chemicals
Subject matter expert of US regulations, specifically the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Process Safety Management Standard (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA RMP Rule
In depth familiarity with MOC, PHA/HAZOP, LOPA, and major accident hazard (MAH) methodologies and good practices
Demonstrated experience in facilitating MOC, HAZOP/PHA, and LOPA
Proficient in Root Cause Analysis methodologies and incident investigation leadership
