Ready to join a quest?

Health Access Solutions exists to provide open access to health care that is financially secure, affordable, and sustainable. That's not a tagline, it's the reason we exist.

We are building a modern, cloud-native platform for healthcare benefits administration and member services, and we're on a quest to make that platform work beautifully for the people who depend on it. We're looking for a Senior Design Engineer to own the design-to-code pipeline for our member-facing and internal applications, someone who wants real ownership over how that platform looks, feels, and functions.

This role sits at the intersection of product design and frontend engineering. You will take approved requirements and turn them into high-fidelity mockups, validate them with stakeholders, and then build them into production applications using an agent-driven development workflow (currently Cursor and SpecKit against our React/TypeScript design system). This role is hands-on, ideal for someone with a strong design eye, expert-level CSS and frontend craft, and fluency in AI-assisted development.

You will own design consistency, accessibility, and UX quality across the HAS Suite, and take mockup and application build work off our engineering leads so they can focus on core backend systems.

You'll be joining a small, growing engineering team. We're actively expanding this team, and you'll help shape design and frontend practices as we grow.

If that sounds like your kind of quest, keep reading.

Primary Responsibilities

Design & UX

  • Translate approved product requirements and acceptance criteria into wireframes and high-fidelity mockups using AI-assisted design tooling.
  • Own and evolve the HAS design system: components, tokens, layout patterns, and usage standards.
  • Run usability validation sessions with internal stakeholders and member services teams; incorporate feedback into design iterations.
  • Ensure WCAG AA accessibility compliance across member-facing surfaces.
  • Ensure responsive design for all member facing applications.

Agent-Driven Application Development

  • Build production frontend features from approved mockups using our agentic workflow (Cursor, SpecKit) against the HAS component library.
  • Author the UX layer of executable specs: interaction states, loading and error handling, responsive behavior, and visual acceptance criteria.
  • Grow toward independently debugging and hardening frontend code in our stack (React, TypeScript, GraphQL client patterns).

Quality & Design QA

  • Perform visual and functional QA on agent-generated output before release; enforce design consistency across applications.
  • Verify built features against specs and mockups, including edge states and cross-device behavior.
  • Contribute UI-level test coverage and participate in release validation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with the Product Manager, who owns requirements and acceptance criteria, to ensure designs faithfully reflect approved scope.
  • Collaborate with principal engineers, who own spec and test rigor for payment, authentication, and PHI-handling paths.
  • Coordinate with third-party contractors on frontend delivery as needed.
  • Set the standard for design and frontend craft as the team grows, mentoring future designers or frontend hires on the HAS design system and agentic workflow.

Who You Are

  • Design-Led: You have deep UI/UX expertise and a portfolio of shipped products that demonstrates taste, consistency, and attention to detail.
  • AI-Native: You already build with agentic coding tools and can show real workflows and shipped artifacts, including code you rejected and why.
  • Quality-Obsessed: Design consistency and frustration-free user experience matter to you enough to catch what automated checks miss.
  • Collaborative: You work well with stakeholders and engineers, and you communicate design decisions clearly.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in product design, UI/UX, or frontend development, including experience leading design work.
  • Expert-level CSS and strong working knowledge of HTML and JavaScript.
  • Experience building or maintaining a design system used by a development team.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted and agentic development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude) in real projects.
  • Working familiarity with React and component-based architecture, with the aptitude and drive to reach independent production capability in our stack.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Willingness to complete HIPAA/data-handling training and a background check, as this role touches member-facing surfaces in a regulated healthcare environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience in healthcare, benefits administration, or other regulated data environments.
  • Accessibility (WCAG) experience on production applications.
  • Experience designing and building spec-driven or automated design-to-development workflows.

What does success look like at:

Day 30:

  • Understands the business model, products, and member-facing workflows.
  • Fluent in the HAS design system and the mockup-to-spec-to-build pipeline.
  • Produced first approved mockups from real requirements and shipped first agent-built UI changes to production.

Day 60:

  • Owns design and build for a full feature: requirements to mockup to stakeholder validation to production, with engineering support on integration points.
  • Performing design QA on agent output across active projects and catching defects before release.
  • Contributing UX-layer specs (states, errors, accessibility criteria) to SpecKit builds.

Day 90:

  • Has a clear mental model of the HAS Suite applications, member workflows, and design standards.
  • Independently delivering member-facing frontend features end to end within the agentic workflow.
  • Demonstrating growth toward independent debugging and code-level verification in React/TypeScript.

What to expect from our process:

  • Portfolio and resume review.
  • Introductory call with the hiring team.
  • Paired design-to-build exercise using our agentic workflow.
  • Final conversation with the Director of Platform Engineering.
