Custodian and Maintenance Technician

Details: Full-time | 12 months | Monday - Friday (flexible schedule)

Location: 1802 S. 17th Street, in the heart of Wilmington, NC

Salary: $32,000-36,000 annually
Schedule: 30-35 hours per week

About Us:

At Spark Academy, we are dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing, and clean environment for young children to learn and grow. We are looking for a Custodian/Maintenance Technician to help maintain the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of our facility. This role is essential in ensuring a welcoming and hygienic space for children, staff, and families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily Cleaning: Perform daily cleaning of classrooms, restrooms, common areas, and play spaces to meet health and safety standards
  • Sanitation: Sanitize equipment, surfaces, and high-touch areas to prevent the spread of germs
  • Building Repairs: Assist with minor plumbing, electrical, and HVAC repairs to ensure a safe environment
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and building systems
  • Outdoor Maintenance: Maintain outdoor areas, including playgrounds and walkways, to ensure they are safe and free of hazards
  • Maintain School Ground: Perform routine landscaping tasks, including mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding to keep the school’s exterior neat and safe
  • Snow and Ice Removal: Clear walkways, parking lots, and entrances of snow, ice, and debris to ensure safe access for students, staff, and visitors
  • Inspect and Repair Outdoor Facilities: Regularly check playgrounds, fences, and parking lots for safety hazards and perform necessary repairs
  • Irrigation System Maintenance: Monitor and maintain sprinklers and other irrigation systems to ensure proper watering of lawns and plants
  • Manage Outdoor Waste and Recycling: Ensure outdoor trash and recycling bins are emptied and properly maintained to support a clean and environmentally friendly campus
  • Maintenance Requests: Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff
  • Inventory Maintenance: Keep inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies and notify management when restocking is needed
  • DCDEE Regulations: Follow all health, safety, and licensing regulations required for childcare facilities
  • Vendor Coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact for external vendors, including landscapers, snow removal services, pest control, and other contractors. Schedule and oversee vendor work to ensure quality and compliance with school standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or maintenance experience, preferably in a childcare, school, or healthcare setting
  • Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems is a plus
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as bending, standing, and climbing ladders
  • Strong attention to detail, especially regarding cleanliness and safety
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must pass a background check and meet all state/federal childcare facility requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable mode of transportation to travel between school facilities, pick up supplies, and respond to maintenance needs as required
