The role involves developing and implementing youth services and literacy programming for children and teens across the district. It also requires building community partnerships, managing social media content, and securing grant funding.
Candidates must hold a Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited school and have one year of professional library experience. A Level 2 certification from the Library of Michigan is required within 90 days of hire.

The Genesee District Library is seeking a full-time, energetic, team-oriented, tech savvy Youth Services Librarian with a strong commitment to public service. Ideal candidate is passionate about serving children, teens, families, and educators. Responsible for programming and community outreach from birth to teens, fostering partnerships and leading literacy efforts in Genesee County. The Genesee District Library is a Class VI system of 19 libraries in Genesee County, and the third largest library system in Michigan. Help us inspire our youth to become lifelong learners.
Responsibilities include:
Evaluates program needs and assists in carrying out services district-wide for children and young adults.
Participates in the scheduling and training of outside story time providers.
Provides youth services information via various digital platforms.
Partners with area schools and other agencies to promote collections and services offered to children and young adults.
Builds strong community bonds by working with community leaders.
Contributes to social media with well written, grammatically correct posts.
Stays current in new library services and trends in youth services through reading, seminars, workshops, webinars, and conferences.
Routinely seeks out and identifies sources for grant funding opportunities. Prepares well written and documented grant proposals specific to children and youth services.
Attends outreach events in schools and community.
Requirements for the position include:
Master’s degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited library school.
A minimum of a Level 2 certification by the Library of Michigan within ninety (90) days of hire.
One year of professional experience in a library.
Must enjoy working with children while creating a high-quality experience for the children, parents, or guardians.
Strong proficiency with electronic databases, Microsoft Office applications, social networking sites and mobile technology.
Ability to get along with diverse personalities and populations.
Ability to work as a team or independently within a fast-paced environment.
Will be required to:
Work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours, around programs, events and community outreach.
Work Environment:
The location of the work site is primarily the GDL Headquarters location. Significant travel throughout the district to attend or conduct library programs and other literacy events. The location will vary between branches of the Genesee District Library System, and the schedule will vary according to the needs of the public and the GDL System.

All library buildings (excluding Genesee Valley Center location) are owned by the local governmental agencies. The GDL provides staffing, materials, administrative support, technology, and programming. Over 1 million visits are made annually to the GDL for its large traditional and online collection, reference resources, high-speed access to the Internet,Wi-Fi, special services, seminars, and family programming. The GDL is funded by a .7481 county-wide millage (excluding City of Flint). An additional 0.25 mills was approved on May 3, 2011. The remaining revenue comes from other sources, such as fees and fines, state aid, penal fines, sponsorships, grants and gifts.
