About this Opportunity

Fort George Community Services is seeking a passionate Teacher UPK to lead a classroom of 3-year-old children in partnership with an Assistant Teacher. The Teacher UPK is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment that promotes school readiness, social-emotional development, and family engagement for up to 15 children.

What You'll Do 

The Teacher UPK will:

  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate, child-centered curriculum and learning experiences.
  • Foster children's growth in literacy, language, numeracy, social-emotional, and problem-solving skills.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports children of all abilities.
  • Observe, assess, and document children's progress using Teaching Strategies GOLD and other required tools.
  • Develop individualized learning goals and lesson plans.
  • Build strong partnerships with families through ongoing communication, conferences, and engagement activities.
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, and organized classroom aligned with DOE, Head Start, and licensing requirements.
  • Collaborate with education staff, specialists, and families to support children's developmental needs.
  • Supervise children during classroom activities, meals, outdoor play, and field trips.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development activities.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; currently enrolled in or pursuing a Master's Degree.
  • New York State Teacher Certification (Birth-Grade 2) required.
  • Must meet New York City Health Code Article 47.13 requirements.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including email, Microsoft Word, and internet navigation.
  • Ability to lift and assist children weighing up to 40 pounds when necessary.

The Ft. George Community Services, Inc. was founded and incorporated in 1981 for the purpose of establishing, maintaining, and operating programs in education, employment and training, economic development, housing, health and social welfare. These programs are designed to strengthen the growth and development of individuals and families in the Washington Heights Area and the Morrisania section of the Bronx. The organization was formed by community residents who were concerned with the provision of comprehensive services to lower-income families with preschool children, and following them through the early years of elementary school. Initially the agency started the operation of our Head Start program with 94 children. The program has now expanded to three sites in the Washington Heights area and one in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. It provides quality comprehensive early childhood services, including Early Head Start, to over 300 children, from birth to Pre-Kindergarten, and their families. Ft. George provides a high quality education program that allow children to acquire skills and competence to cope effectively with the present environment and later responsibilities in school and everyday life. Ft. George recognizes, respects and supports the diversity of children attending the program by providing the children with various experiences, activities and material with increasing complexity and challenges as children develop.
