Position Summary

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Technician is responsible for supporting occupational safety, environmental compliance, and industrial hygiene activities throughout the Fincantieri Marine Repair shipyard. The position performs inspections, sampling, regulatory compliance activities, training, incident response, and customer support for both commercial and U.S. Navy ship repair operations. Personnel are expected to maintain competency in both safety and environmental disciplines.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct daily shipyard safety walk inspections, including the deck plate, vessels, drydock, and shipyard; conduct Job Hazard Analyses, investigate incidents and near misses, and verify corrective actions 
  • Deliver EHS training to employees and subcontractors, including Shipyard Competent Person certifications and atmospheric testing, emergency response, fire prevention, and hazardous materials management 
  • Support environmental compliance programs through hazardous waste inspections, waste determinations, spill prevention (SPCC), stormwater, wastewater, and environmental sampling
  • Support OSHA, EPA, DEP, USCG, NAVSEA inspections, and company EHS requirements through inspections, audits, and regulatory and environmental recordkeeping
  • Other duties and overtime as assigned

Requirements

  • Must be knowledgeable about OSHA 1910/1915 and environmental regulations
  • Ability to interpret OSHA, EPA, DEP, USCG, and NAVSEA requirements 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in inclement weather (cold, hot, rain, snow, etc.)
  • Must have basic organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor
  • Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMSNA and have high values for safety awareness

Education and Experience 

  • Associate degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 2 years of ship repair, shipbuilding, maritime, or heavy industrial EHS experience preferred
  • HAZWOPER 40, RCRA, OSHA 30, and First Aid/CPR certifications required; Shipyard Competent Person and ASP or CSP certifications preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk; use hands and arms to grasp, handle, manipulate, or feel objects and controls; stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch; and speak or hear. The employee may lift and/or move up to 35lbs regularly and up to 50lbs occasionally. Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid climates. The employee may also be required to work in confined spaces and at varying heights. Frequent use of PPE is required to minimize noise exposure, moving machinery, weather elements, and other potential hazards, including the risk of injury.
