Full job description

What is the role?

dotCMS is a cloud-based Universal CMS that is changing how enterprises do digital. We seek a Developer Advocate (DevRel Engineer) to bridge the gap between our platform and the developer community.

As a DevRel Engineer, you are a hands-on builder who is highly active on GitHub and LinkedIn. You build working examples against dotCMS's headless SDKs, AI capabilities, and APIs, then turn them into tutorials, demos, and developer content. Building is the foundation of this role, not an afterthought. This is a hybrid role that combines developer relations, technical content creation, and community support. You will help developers succeed with dotCMS by creating engaging, high-quality content, participating in the developer ecosystem, and facilitating technical conversations in and outside of our community.

You may work remotely from any location that is compatible with standard U.S. business hours (unless specified otherwise). Please note this is a Contractor full-time position, and we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

What is dotCMS?

Founded in 2003, dotCMS is the most agile, scalable and secure content management system for enterprise. Built on leading Java technology, dotCMS is an open-source, universal content management system that gives developers the flexibility of a headless CMS while equipping marketers with no-code visual content authoring. Whether you're building a network of global websites, an employee intranet, a customer portal, or a single-page web application, dotCMS helps you manage content, images, and assets in one centralized location and deliver them to any channel. Some of our notable customers include Telus, Standard & Poors, Hospital Corporation of America, Royal Bank of Canada, Deutsche Bank, Comcast, Vodafone, Thomson Reuters, Dairy Queen, Lennox International, Chewy.com, and O’Reilly Autoparts.

Who are we, really?

At “the dot,” you’ll find a diverse team of authentic individuals who share the goal of building the most agile, scalable, and secure content management system, delighting customers, and having a lot of fun doing it. We’re a curious, innovative, and collaborative group that works from anywhere. Whether it’s to enjoy the beautiful views of new countries or just more “you” time outside of work.

What you’ll bring to the team:

  • Maintain a strong public presence across platforms like LinkedIn, GitHub, and developer forums.
  • Produce content that includes documentation, blogs, screencasts, walkthroughs, and short-form dev-focused social media content.
  • Create developer content across our core areas: headless and visual editing (UVE), AI-driven developer workflows (dotAI, MCP), and emerging search (GEO)
  • Experience creating technical content, videos, blogs, tutorials and how-to guides, developer relations articles, and other content for technical user and non-technical user audiences in dotCMS
  • Coordinate and participate in programming events, developer webinars, and online community engagement.
  • Grow the dotCMS developer community through proactive content and engagement across the Community Forum, GitHub, and social — not just moderation.
  • Perform in-depth technical research and stay up to date with emerging technologies to inform content and community strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Design, Product & Marketing to ensure documentation aligns with platform updates and developer needs.
  • Provide technical feedback to product and engineering teams based on community interactions.
  • Own the developer-facing content cadence and community-growth metrics; report against baselines and targets.

Why we get excited about you:

  • 3 to 4 years of hands-on coding experience in Frontend JavaScript (React, Angular, or Next.js preferred); comfortable reading and writing code.
  • Comfortable building against REST/GraphQL APIs, auth flows, and SDK integration — not just consuming them. Java familiarity a plus (dotCMS is Java-based).
  • Solid grasp of documentation tools, content management systems, and/or marketing technology.
  • Previous experience in technical writing, preferably in a SaaS, devtool, or CMS environment.
  • Comfortable on camera and with public speaking—this role involves livestreaming, video creation, and community-facing events.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with an ability to simplify complex concepts for varied audiences.
  • Active GitHub profile and/or social media presence that reflects involvement in dev communities or projects.
  • Curious, proactive, and self-driven with a “builder” mindset.
  • A strong sense of curiosity, a love of learning, and a willingness to roll up their sleeves and experiment. The courage to ask supposedly “stupid questions” is underrated!
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or relevant to the field

Why should you join?

If you have great experience but are tired of being a cog in a giant corporate wheel, this job is for you. It's a chance to stand up dotCMS's developer relations function — own the developer narrative across visual editing, AI, and headless — at an established, growing company with a mature product in use by major global organizations. Everything you do every day, will have a huge impact on our company. Your work will be seen, felt and recognized and your past experience valued.

Your Compensation. We offer competitive compensation that allows you to make a great living for yourself and your loved ones.

Your Team. We are a humble, competitive, and small vendor making waves in our industry, and you will be part of a team that has your back. You never walk alone! We are a diverse and distributed team, and we offer annual company-paid training and development to our employees.

Your Voice. Your voice matters to all of us, and we appreciate your opinion as we scale our company to the next level in an open and transparent environment. We will periodically update the entire team on business performance and strategic initiatives and offer the stage for an entrepreneurial-minded professional to produce key initiatives that help to move the needle.

Your Benefits. We value you as an individual, team member, and professional. We can only expect you to deliver high performance within the right amount of You-time. Therefore, you will have access to a PTO policy (after the first 90 days in the company) and a generous number of local company-paid holidays.
