The Detroit Lions are seeking an energetic, talented, and motivated individual to serve asRoary, the team’s mascot, in a part-time backup role. This position will work closely with the Head of Mascot Programming and will also support Roary as a handler during appearances and events as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Attend appearances as Roary at community events, promotional engagements, and Detroit Lions events, including evenings, weekdays, and holidays as needed
Maintain the integrity and consistency of the Roary character by adhering to established mannerisms, body language, personality traits, and fan interaction standards
Serve as Roary’s handler at select appearances, assisting with event logistics, crowd engagement, safety, and overall mascot support as needed
Assist with crowd management and maintaining a safe, positive environment for fan and staff, including proactively identify and de-escalating potential conflicts and following all established security protocols and event procedures
Ensure the mascot costume is properly maintained, cleaned, and presented in accordance with organizational appearance and care standards
Support the development and maintenance of mascot program policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with safety standards, organizational expectations, and industry best practices
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Must be motivated, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team
Maintain professionalism when communicating with internal and external contacts
Meets challenges with resourcefulness and creativity
Will keep appropriate information confidential
Will accept other responsibilities and duties required by the supervisor consistent with the objectives and essential functions of this position
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Prior mascot or costume performance experience required; experience with a collegiate or professional sports team preferred
Prior experience in crowd management, security, and/or conflict resolution, with the ability to remain composed under pressure in a public or event based environment highly preferred
Ability to meet physical demands of mascot duties, including extended periods of time in costume, high-energy movement, and maintaining performance stamina during appearances
Must be able to safely and effectively perform mascot duties in the team’s standard mascot costume, which is designed to fit individuals approximately 5’10”-6’1” tall.
Ability to be energetic, enthusiastic, confident, comedic and outgoing within Roary’s established performance guidelines.
Strong communication, time management, organizational, and punctuality skills
Ability to be trained and cross-utilized to support other activities as necessary
Knowledge of the Detroit Lions and Roary brands
Must understand and consistently practice safe performance techniques, prioritizing personal safety, fan safety, and adherence to all established protocols during appearances
Must be able to work non-traditional hours in a variety of settings, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by events, appearances, and game schedules
Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
Must reside within 50 miles of the Metro Detroit area
Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; must be willing and able to travel throughout the Metro Detroit area and beyond for games, rehearsals, and appearances, and transport costume and related materials to off-site events as needed
