Summary

Assist in the delivery of Make Your Own Glass (MYOG) programs at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass (Museum) primarily by making furnace glassblowing and/or flameworking projects with guests. Work with individuals and groups to make glass objects such as ornaments, flowers, pumpkins, vessels, paperweights, and/or beads and pendants.  Support the entire team with various pre and post project work, from cutting and sorting glass to packing and shipping finished work.

This is a Full-Time position.

Responsibilities (Essential functions denoted with ) 

Glassmaking

• Work with guests one-on-one to make furnace-blown and/or flameworked projects that vary in duration/complexity.
• Work with individuals for longer durations for an in-depth experience, helping them through all stages of making a glass vessel as trained.
• Work with individuals and groups to create sandblasted, engraved, or fused glass objects and other new projects as trained.
• Process all glass objects from their creation to their departure from The Studio, including running annealers, packaging, and labelling objects for shipment or pickup.
• Assist or lead technical duties and processes, including preparing supplies, running the shops, and cleaning and maintaining equipment across The Studio to the standard outlined by management.
• Maintain high safety standards and adhere to all Museum safety policy and procedures
• Teach and/or lead glassmaking activities across all programs as needed.
• Host social and public events for The Studio as requested.
• Maintain the MYOG workshops and wider facility according to The Studio’s standards.
• Support specific programs designed to grow the diversity of The Studio user community.
• Open or close the MYOG Workshop as needed.
• Take inventory of workshop supplies as requested.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Associate’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience required.
• Glassblowing experience and/or flameworking experience and ability to operate related equipment required.
• Experience with sandblasting, fusing and related equipment preferred.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, MS Teams and SharePoint.

• Ability and comfort with providing basic instructions to individuals and groups to create furnace-worked, flameworked, sandblasted, engraved, or fused glass objects.
• Ability to learn and navigate all necessary shipping software.
• Ability to work with artists, instructors, studio users, the public and donors in a pleasant, helpful, and efficient manner.
• Ability to work with people from a variety of cultures; maintaining an appropriate voice for diverse audiences.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills; work effectively and professionally with people at all levels, including external stakeholders.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to work well with a team or independently under minimal supervision.
• Weekends, evenings and holidays required, flexibility in hours necessary.
• Regional and/or domestic travel, as needed.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to move about, operate/use equipment, communicate, detect/distinguish, and reach. Note: Position requires sustained repetitive motion. The employee is occasionally required to remain in a stationary position, ascend/descend, detect/distinguish (impaired olfactory sense is potentially problematic for workplace safety).  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish color and adjust focus.

The employee is frequently required to move/transport up to 50 pounds.

The work environment is regularly controlled by indoor climate and extreme heat (non-weather).  The work environment is occasionally indoors not climate controlled, wet, humid, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, odors, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
