Role Purpose
Our sustained investment in research, development, and invention means we’re always ready to solve the toughest challenges alongside our customers. The individual as a Product Development Engineer will lead and support product development projects and provide technical leadership for glass materials and components that support the Advanced Optics business. This person will translate customer and market requirements into product concepts, develop material and process solutions, and help move new products from early-stage development through qualification and manufacturing readiness. The role will focus on working closely with Development, Manufacturing, Quality, and Commercial teams to align technical work with product requirements, business priorities, and customer needs. The person is expected to have broad technical skills, strong product-development judgment, and the ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams. Strong presentation and communication skills are required. 30-50% travel is required.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and execute product-development experiments, including design of experiments, prototype builds, data analysis, performance validation, and communication of results and recommendations
Translate technical learning into product specifications, process windows, qualification plans, and manufacturing transfer requirements
Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and commercial teams to evaluate new product concepts, reduce technical risk, and support scale-up to production
Support customer-facing technical discussions by connecting material and process capabilities to product performance, reliability, and manufacturability
Lead technicians as required and coordinate work needed to deliver prototypes, testing, qualification data, and development milestones
Experiences/Education - Required
Bachelor’s Degree in Physical/Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline with minimum 3 years of relevant experience
Demonstrated expertise in ceramic and/or glass material and process/product development, with emphasis on translating technical capability into product performance
Ability to define product requirements, evaluate performance trade-offs, and connect material/process variables to customer-facing product attributes
Strong data analysis skills and ability to use experimental results to guide design decisions, qualification plans, and product readiness
Experience with planning and executing experiments in a team environment
Ability to strategize and think critically about product-development pathways, technical risks, scale-up needs, and manufacturability and cost
30% to 50% travel required
Experiences/Education - Desired
Experience with product qualification, reliability testing, and performance validation for advanced materials or optical components
Expertise in glass or ceramic optical metrology methodologies and ability to link metrology results to product requirements
Broad understanding of ceramic processing technologies and how they influence product design, cost, yield, and scalability
Structured problem-solving techniques, applied statistics, and design of experiments for product-development decision making
Familiarity with manufacturing processes, process control, and transfer of new products into production
This position does not support immigration sponsorship.
