One of the four Carnegie Museums, the Science Center is Pittsburgh’s premier science exploration destination and the region’s most visited museum, reaching more than 500,000 people annually through its hands-on exhibits, camps, classes, and educational programs.

This Part-Time position is eligible for many of the Carnegie Museums' Benefits.

 

This is a union position. 

The Pit Crew Member, Science of Speed supports the daily operations of an electric go-kart course, simulators, related exhibits, & ticketing while providing exceptional service to all guests. Pit Crew Members will be assigned to a variety of responsibilities. Those tasks include Track Marshal, Race Master, Simulator Operator, Greeter, Ticketing, etc.

 

Qualifications:

Education And Experience:

  • Candidate should have at least one year of experience working in the customer service field.
  • Prefer experience with cash handling.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Successful candidate must be organized, be an excellent communicator, have a positive attitude and a love of learning.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, team environment, “think on one’s feet”, be flexible, and adapt to the everchanging needs of the museum.
  • Able to work proficiently with a computer, ticketing system equipment and software.
  • Must be able to work a variable schedule – weekends, holiday, and evening hours (as late as midnight) required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This is a front-line position and requires performing various functions throughout the exhibition that require pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to maneuver (e.g. pull, push, lift) up to 100lbs with assistance.
  • Must be able to drive go-karts as required.
  • Ability to walk the entire multi-level track, climb stairs, and be comfortable with heights up to 20 feet off the ground.
  • Must be able to provide clear verbal and visual instructions to guests.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND Accountabilities:

  • Perform the daily job functions of the briefing room and electric go-kart track with a focus on excellent service, accessibility, safety, seamless operations, and maximum efficiency. Conduct safety briefings ensuring compliance and understanding of track rules. Provide necessary gear and storage options to guests racing on the track. Actively monitor and respond to guest speed and behavior on the track. Reset and clean karts, gear, and track. 
  • Oversee guests’ use of exhibits and simulators, ensuring proper handling of equipment and orderly flow. Assist guests as needed.
  • Perform the daily job functions at the Science of Speed ticket counter. Successfully operate the point-of-sale ticketing system with strong attention to detail and proper cash handling techniques at all times. Protect the security of confidential monetary information. Promote add-ons, events, and other services offered by the Science Center.
  • Actively support the Operations Management Team in gathering, tracking, and utilizing guest feedback. Effectively respond to and address “on the spot” feedback in a timely and professional manner.
  • Serve as an ambassador of the museum with a focus on providing excellent guest service, hospitality, and satisfaction. Share knowledge of museum offerings, operations, and services. Regularly attend and participate in team meetings and trainings. Communicate with others in a courteous and sensitive manner, projecting a positive and professional image of the Science Center and Carnegie Museums.
  • Responsible for enhancing the guest experience. Proactively greet and engage guests. Foster meaningful interactions with guests. Maintain a visible and accessible presence and be attentive to guest needs.
  • Help resolve guest concerns or issues as they arise. Seek support as needed.
  • Attend emergency preparedness training and demonstrate an understanding of Science Center emergency procedures. Respond to emergency situations in accordance with prescribed Security Department policies.
  • Regularly communicate with and work with other team members. Consistently demonstrate positive work outcomes, modeling successful skills and strategies for colleagues.
  • At all times, uphold the Science Center’s Four Keys of Operation: Safety, Courtesy, The Experience, and Efficiency; interact with all colleagues in a professional and respectful manner in accordance with CMP Core Competencies and Science Center Community Norms.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

The following PA Act 153 clearances, or proof of application of clearances, are required beginning employment and as a condition of continued employment: Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check Obtaining the required clearances is completed as part of the new hire process.
