More About the Opportunity 

We are hoping you will join us as a Sr Manager, Communications - Editorial (Sr Manager I) and help shape the future of healthcare where you’ll be an integral part of our Communications team, helping to strive for excellence while we serve our member health with dignity, respecting the value and needs of each of our members through collaboration with our providers, community partners and local stakeholders.  This position has been approved to be Partial Telework. 

  • If telework is approved, you are required to work within the State of California only and if Partial Telework, also come in to the Main Office in Orange, CA, at least two (2) days per week minimum.  

The Sr Manager for Communications (Editorial) will oversee the day-to-day operations of the editorial team within the Communications department and collaborate with the Director on communications strategy and execution. You'll have the ability to communicate complex issues in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences, write under tight time constraints, and ensure the development and completion of communications pieces within deadlines. Additionally, you must have a high degree of professional polish to independently handle sensitive information appropriately and interact with CalOptima Health’s executive management and members of the media on behalf of the organization. The nature of the department is dynamic and fast-paced, which requires both excellent task management and independent problem-solving skills.  Together, we are building a stronger, more equitable health system.

Your Contributions To the Team: 

  • 45% - Leadership
    • Cultivates and promotes a mission-driven culture of high-quality performance, with a member focus on customer service, consistency, dignity and accountability.
    • Directs and assists the team in carrying out department responsibilities and collaborates with the leadership team and staff to support short- and long-term goals/priorities for the department.
    • Hires, manages, trains, reviews and sets goals for the department and staff.
    • Collaborates with leaders in departments across the organization to monitor the needs for editorial support and plans the work of staff accordingly.
  • 50% - Program Oversight
    • Develops and implements CalOptima Health’s communications plans based on research and in response to business need.
    • Writes and edits material independently and accurately for a broad range of communications tools and publications, including but not limited to newsletters, annual reports, press releases, and executive emails and messages.
    • Ensures timely completion of Communications’ projects and deliverables.
    • Implements and maintains processes to update regular communications tools and publications.
    • Sets editorial department policies and desktop procedures to ensure smooth operations and accountability for outcomes; continually seeks process improvements.
    • Collaborates with the Director in developing key messages for the organization and executives.
    • Handles complex and sensitive information, including the Chief Executive Officer’s communications with the Board of Directors as needed.
    • Builds and maintains exceptional quality standards for the department’s editorial content. Coaches direct reports for ongoing improvement.
    • Supports direct collaborative activities and assignments with affiliated departments, including Community Relations and Government Affairs.
  • 5% - Other
    • Completes other projects and duties as assigned.

Do You Have What the Role Requires?

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, health administration or related field PLUS 5 years of experience in managing communications, public relations, community relations, crisis communication, or media relations required; an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position such as those listed above may also be qualifying.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience required.

  • Master’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, health administration or related field.
