Job Summary
Under the direction of the Associate Athletics Director, Marketing and Communication, the Athletic Strategic Communications Specialist will be responsible for the development and implementation of strategic communications and elevating the profile of Cal Poly Athletics. This will include overseeing the Athletic Communications staff, crafting a strategic and proactive approach to enhance the most visible and important messaging opportunities for Cal Poly Athletics and each of its teams. This position will work closely with the Associate Athletic Director for External Relations on all communications, media inquiries, statements and social media postings in an effort to effectively engage the Mustang fan and donor base, as well as the San Luis Obispo community at large.
This is a full-time temporary position and is eligible for full benefits, including medical, dental, vision and CalPERS retirement. (at least 6 month +1 day)
Department Summary
Cal Poly is committed to providing a broad based, high quality, competitive, NCAA Division I athletic program that affords student-athletes opportunities to take advantage of Cal Poly's unique Learn by Doing philosophy. Cal Poly's Athletic teams compete in the Big West, Big Sky and Pac 12 conferences. Cal Poly fields twenty-one athletic teams with approximately 550 student athletes.
Key Qualifications
Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of marketing and communications theory and media vehicles.
Thorough knowledge of athletics events and applicable NCAA bylaws as related to sports information and athletics media relations.
Thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for athletic events.
Ability to build and manage more sophisticated media contacts.
Strong story development and journalistic writing skills. Ability to write and edit media guides, brochures, game programs, new releases and game stories. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages.
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated Hiring Range: $62,136 - 75,744 per year
Classification Range: $62,136 - $90,516 Per Year
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
