Job Description:
This role is based in London and sits in the Global Structured Trade Finance (STF) team within BP’s trading business (ST&S) and reports to the VP, Structured Trade Finance & Working Capital. The Structured Trade Finance team is responsible for designing and delivering tailored financing and credit‑risk‑transfer solutions that unlock trading opportunities, improve working capital, and directly enhance ST&S P&L—especially in complex, higher‑risk markets.
Key responsibilities include structuring non-debt funding solutions by typically combining financing with risk distribution. These solutions are used to optimise working capital, extend credit capacity, and unlock trading opportunities that would otherwise be constrained by balance sheet or credit limits.
The STF team acts as a commercial interface between traders, originators, credit risk, treasury, legal teams, and external partners including banks, insurers, and alternative capital providers. It directly supports P&L generation by improving traders’ commercial offers, enabling complex structured offtake and supply deals, and supporting growth in emerging markets. In addition, the team ensures the ongoing (‘silent running’) management of funding and credit-risk mitigation structures, maintaining robust controls, governance, and reporting to ensure liquidity stability.
The STF function is global in scope, supporting refined products, gas, power, LNG, and energy transition-related trading activities across all regions.
This role manages trade finance globally for bp and manages large trade finance portfolios, ensuring timely, safe, cost effective and efficient execution and partners with colleagues to support commodity trade flows across trading.
What you will do...
Leadership & Partnership
Team Leadership (multi-region): Lead and strengthen team capability and succession planning across trade finance, liquidity management, and loan operations. The role also provides leadership and specialist support to the STF Finance, Business & Technology (FBT) teams in Budapest and Kuala Lumpur, serving as a designated contact for banking issues, capacity constraints, control matters, and situations requiring sound judgement in ambiguous circumstances.
Operational Leadership: Improve the efficiency, control environment, and digitalization of trade finance activities, including FBT, by partnering across front, middle, and back office to optimize the full transaction pipeline. Lead the relationship and digital strategy with third-party trade finance platforms, such as Komgo and CubeLogic.
Banking Relationships: Manage bp’s global banking relationships across trade finance activities, including negotiating lines and pricing and onboarding new banking partners.
Collaboration and Engagement: Partner with Trading, Treasury, Legal, and Operations to support deal execution, foster a solution-focused and commercial mindset within the team, and minimise complexity and operational risk.
Operational Excellence & Risk Management
Trade Instruments Execution Oversight: Oversee the management and safe execution of working capital and risk cover solutions, including LCs, guarantees, PNs, discounting, SCF, title transfer transactions, trade credit insurance, and other non-debt structures for ST&S, C&P, and the wider bp group. Oversee the operation by maintaining robust processes and controls, including within FBT STF.
Funded Deal Operations: Oversee funded deal operations for loan and loan-like activity across ST&S, ensuring financing transactions are implemented, administered, and monitored in a controlled, compliant, and scalable manner to reduce operational, credit, and lifecycle risk.
Working Capital Optimisation: Drive the effective use of trade finance instruments to improve liquidity and reduce funding costs.
Risk Management & Governance: Oversee the liquidity risk associated with bp’s working capital optimisation programs, while reducing concentration and other portfolio risks, including cyber risk and business continuity exposure.
Strategic Enablement and Commercial Impact
Commercial Enablement: Unlock trading opportunities by optimising capital and externalising credit risk in ways that materially improve competitiveness and returns. Support growth strategies by delivering trade finance solutions that enable entry into higher-risk geographies and counterparties.
Strategic Oversight of Bank Capacity: Oversee bp group’s utilisation and operation of its letter of credit facilities across more than 25 banks. In partnership with Treasury, ensure sufficient LC capacity to meet business needs while maintaining cost efficiencies and allocating business across partner banks. Also oversee day-to-day facility utilisation and regional allocation in collaboration with bp’s financing partners and global trade finance teams.
What you will bring...
- Significant experience in trade finance and/or energy trading.
- Expertise in trade finance products, including pre-export finance, prepayment, inventory finance, discounting receivables, letters of credit, guarantees, and standby letters of credit.
- Experience in structuring, developing, and delivering financing and transaction solutions.
- Strong understanding of commodity value chains, credit risk, international trade flows, and derivatives-related risks.
- Experience in commodity finance, with a strong understanding of the financial, operational, distribution, and geopolitical risks across energy markets.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to lead teams effectively.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and people management skills, with the ability to build lasting relationships with financial institutions, insurers, and senior executives.
- Ability to set direction aligned with business growth, integrate trade finance into broader strategy, and drive innovation in structures and funding.
- Ability to balance commercial delivery, risk, and operational control.
- Track record of improving organisational efficiency, including through digital initiatives and better use of team resources.
