As a Business Controller, you will join BII’s small finance team that is operating at the intersection of foundation accounting, grant management, and AI-enabled finance operations. The team manages a portfolio of convertible loans to early-stage startups and administers a large number of grant agreements simultaneously (each with its own budget, reporting calendar, and donor relationship). As part of the finance team, you will collaborate closely with the wider organization and help scale BII’s operations in Denmark and internationally.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Own the financial management of BII’s grant portfolio: maintain the grant agreement register (budgets, eligible costs, overhead caps, payment schedules, reporting deadlines) and prepare and submit financial reports and payment claims to donors on schedule
- Manage donor communication on financial matters and monitor grant compliance on an ongoing basis, flagging when spending approaches overhead caps, cost categories risk overrun, or reporting deadlines approach
- Coordinate with Venture Creation, program and grant managers to ensure agreements are signed, budgets are in place, and all parties understand their financial obligations
- Run BII’s internal financial management process: produce monthly management accounts (P&L by cost category, department and grant) and prepare Board and management reporting packs (grant allocation, OPEX variance, cash position, portfolio summary)
- Own the monthly budget follow-up and drive the annual objectives-based, activity-based budget process: compare actuals to budget, explain variances in business terms, and consolidate and challenge departmental plans
- Contribute to the statutory accounting cycle: prepare and post grant revenue recognition journals, reconciliations (deferred income, intercompany, portfolio carrying value) and month-end close, and support year-end and audit as backup
- Develop and maintain Excel models and dashboards for grant tracking, department budgets and cash forecasting
- Work fluently across Business Central, Atlas and Excel – understanding and improving grant data flows – and adopt, operate and expand BII’s AI-assisted finance workflows (compliance monitoring, variance narratives, invoice screening)
Professional & Personal Qualifications- Master’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field
- 6-10 years of experience across financial accounting and management accounting
- Experience with grant or project accounting and donor reporting requirements
- Solid understanding of Danish GAAP and/or IFRS, including revenue recognition and deferred income
- Experience owning or driving monthly close and reporting processes
- Advanced Excel capabilities and ERP experience, preferably Business Central
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in Danish and English
- Curiosity about AI, automation, and continuous improvement in finance
- Proactive, structured, detail-oriented, and quality-conscious
- Ability to translate financial complexity into practical insights for non-finance stakeholders
