SUMMARY

The Heat Treat Set Up Class B Technician is responsible for operating and setting up Austemper heat treating equipment including furnaces, oil quench, and tempering systems. This role performs all standard operator duties while independently managing machine startup, burner relights, dewpoint adjustments, and identifying next-job priorities when work boards are depleted. This position requires strong process knowledge, mechanical aptitude, and attention to quality, safety, and proper containment procedures during normal operations and unplanned interruptions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

• Perform all Heat Treat Operator duties.
• Turn belts on and off and safely start up machines after downtime or burn-off events.
• Adjust endothermic/natural gas systems to regulate dewpoints.
• Relight inductor, pilot, and quench burners following established safety protocols.
• Add salt to machines and oil to oil quench systems as needed.
• Review routings, QFs, and QJIs in PLEX to ensure proper process compliance.
• Enter maintenance work orders in PLEX for any mechanical issues.
• Contain parts properly in the event of power loss.
• If work board is empty, identify and prioritize next part from the appropriate lane.
• Maintain all standard documentation, logs, and visual controls.
• Support quality and safety through accurate checks and reporting.
• Perform other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or lead.

 EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Prior experience in heat treat operations or thermal processing preferred.
• Familiarity with PLEX or ERP systems a plus.

TECHNICAL SKILLS & ABILITIES 

• Ability to interpret and follow heat treat routings, QF forms, and QJI work instructions.
• Basic computer skills for data entry and label creation.
• Capable of reading gauges, timers, and control panel indicators.
• The ability to enter work orders and log production events using PLEX.

 PHYICAL DEMANDS 

• Must regularly stand, walk, reach with hands and arms.
• Must frequently lift or move up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
• Must be able to work in high-temperature environments, particularly during summer months.
• Must have good vision, hearing, and the ability to communicate clearly.
