7 Best Candidate Fraud Detection Tools for Startups (October 2026)
SUMMARY

7 tools that catch fake job applicants, compared by where they catch them: application, ID check or live interview. Pricing, ATS fit and real downsides.

Short answer: if you hire through an ATS and want fakes flagged before the first call, start with Endorsed (broadest ATS coverage) or Clera (if you're on Ashby, Workable or Lever and want checks against fakes other companies already caught). If you're on Greenhouse, turn on Greenhouse Real Talent with CLEAR. If your worry is a deepfake on a live video call, BrightHire is the only tool here built into Zoom itself. Need hard ID and selfie checks before someone gets system access? Pick Persona.

Gartner expects 1 in 4 candidate profiles worldwide to be fake by 2028. A startup with one recruiter can't afford to spend that quarter of its interview slots on people who don't exist.

How we picked

We looked at more than a dozen tools that claim to catch fake job applicants and kept the 7 that publish clear documentation on what they check. Every fact below links to the vendor's own site or a press release. We dropped tools whose only public footprint was a directory listing, and general fraud platforms built for banks that never mention hiring.

We sorted by where in the funnel each tool catches a fake: at application, at an identity checkpoint, or during the interview. That matters more for a 10-person startup than any feature list. Your most expensive hour is the first interview.

We built Clera, and it's on this list. It isn't ranked first, and it gets a downside like everyone else.

If you're still working out what fake applicants look like, start with our guide to fake job applicants and candidate fraud.

1. Endorsed

Best for: catching fakes at application inside the ATS you already run.

Endorsed sits inside your ATS and scores every applicant without asking recruiters or candidates to do anything extra. Its site lists 27 integrations, including Ashby, Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, iCIMS and SmartRecruiters. It names customers like Life360, Yahoo, Huntress and GPTZero. It looks for stolen identities, proxy interviewers and applicants from sanctioned regions.

Why it made the list: the widest ATS coverage of any tool here, and a free trial that needs no credit card.

Downside: the Growth plan is $249 per user per month, billed yearly, with a 3-seat minimum. That's about $9,000 a year before you've flagged anyone. Too much for a founder hiring their first five engineers.

Pricing: free trial, then $249/user/month. Enterprise is custom for companies with over 1,000 employees.

2. Clera

Best for: startups on Ashby, Workable or Lever who want each applicant checked against fakes other companies already caught.

Clera is a hiring platform, and Fake Candidate Detection is the part that checks your inbound applicants. Most tools only compare your applicants with each other. Clera compares them with the hundreds of thousands of profiles it has seen and every fake it has confirmed. A repeat fake gets flagged the first time they apply to you. It checks 10+ signals: contact details shared across different names, generated-looking emails, CVs that contradict LinkedIn, LinkedIn profiles that don't exist, and reports from other employers.

Why it made the list: nobody is rejected automatically. Every flag comes with its evidence, and real candidates never upload a passport or a selfie.

Downside: it works with three ATSs today (Ashby, Workable and Lever). There's no self-serve signup yet, so you start with a 15-minute demo.

Pricing: not published. Book a demo.

3. Metaview

Best for: teams that already use Metaview to review applications and interview notes.

Metaview added automatic fraud detection to its Application Review product in April 2026. It reads resumes, LinkedIn profiles, application answers and email addresses. Then it flags two things: whether the person is who they claim to be, and whether a bot filled in the form. There's no extra setup, and Metaview says flags exist to focus recruiter attention, not to auto-reject.

Why it made the list: if you already pay for Metaview, it's the cheapest extra layer you can add.

Downside: the checks run at application review. Nothing here watches a live interview, and it only makes sense if Metaview is already in your stack.

Pricing: part of Metaview plans. Check with their team for current pricing.

4. Sardine

Best for: startups where security or compliance owns hiring risk.

Sardine brings the fraud tech it built for fintech into hiring. It gives every applicant a low, medium or high risk score. It checks for throwaway emails, VoIP phones, devices reused across applications, VPN or proxy use against the claimed location, and virtual cameras or emulators during interviews. Signals reach your ATS through webhooks or a hosted application form.

Why it made the list: the deepest device and network signals here, and it covers both the application and the interview.

Downside: it's built for security teams. A customer testimonial on its site mentions adding Sardine's SDK to the hiring flow, so plan for some engineering time. No pricing is published.

Pricing: contact sales.

5. Persona

Best for: checking a candidate's government ID and face before they get a laptop and system access.

Persona launched Candidate Verification on March 11, 2026. It works with Ashby, Greenhouse and Workday, so recruiting and security teams can run selfie-to-ID matching and liveness checks inside the hiring flow. Persona reports blocking over 75 million AI face-spoofing attempts across its platform in 2024, according to VentureBeat.

Why it made the list: the strongest answer to "is this the same human we're about to give access to?"

Downside: every real candidate has to show an ID and take a selfie. Run it too early and good people drop out. Most teams save it for the offer stage.

Pricing: not published for Candidate Verification.

6. Greenhouse Real Talent with CLEAR

Best for: companies already running hiring on Greenhouse.

Greenhouse and CLEAR announced their partnership on June 12, 2025. Candidates verify inside their MyGreenhouse profile with a government ID and a liveness-checked selfie. Greenhouse's support docs say device and network data are checked too, and the ID data stays with CLEAR, not Greenhouse. Recruiters can trigger it at any stage, from first screen to pre-onboarding.

Why it made the list: zero new vendors if you're already on Greenhouse.

Downside: it only exists inside Greenhouse. It's also an identity check, so it confirms the person is real but not that their work history is.

Pricing: part of Greenhouse Real Talent. Check with your Greenhouse rep.

7. BrightHire

Best for: catching deepfakes and proxy help during live video interviews.

BrightHire, now part of Zoom, launched deepfake detection inside Zoom interviews in June 2026. It flags rendering artifacts, IP location, odd answer timing, tab switching and answers that match LLM output, all in one review screen. BrightHire says it's included in every package, and flags send a candidate to human review, never to auto-rejection.

Why it made the list: the only tool here built into the video platform, which is where a proxy or a face-swap actually shows up.

Downside: BrightHire's help center says the full signal set runs on Zoom. Teams gets fewer signals, Google Meet gets deepfake detection only, and phone screens get none. And by the time it fires, you've already spent the interview.

Pricing: included in BrightHire plans, which aren't listed publicly.

What Clera's own data shows

Clera has confirmed 644 fake candidate profiles as of October 17, 2026. 591 of them were flagged since September 1, after we switched on automated checks across every profile we see. That's 386 in September and 205 in the first half of October.

Treat that jump as a sign of how many fakes were already sitting in pipelines, not proof the problem doubled overnight. Once you look, you find them. Remote roles are the easiest target, because nobody meets in person until the offer. The US Department of Justice found North Korean IT workers had landed jobs at more than 100 US companies that way.

How to choose

  • If you get hundreds of inbound applicants a week, catch fakes at application. Use Endorsed, Clera or Metaview, depending on your ATS and budget.
  • If you're on Greenhouse, turn on CLEAR first. It costs you no new vendor.
  • If a hire gets production or customer-data access in week one, add Persona or CLEAR at the offer stage, whatever else you run.
  • If you've already had a suspicious video interview, BrightHire on Zoom is the direct fix. Pair it with a check at application so fewer fakes reach the call.

Most startups need one tool at application and one check before access. Fixing your technical interview process helps too, because live problem-solving is hard to fake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Software that flags job applicants who aren't who they claim to be. That covers stolen or synthetic identities, proxy interviewers, deepfaked video and fabricated work history. Some tools work at application from data alone. Others ask the candidate for an ID and a selfie. A third group watches the live interview.

None of the seven here do by default. Endorsed, Clera, Metaview and BrightHire all say flags go to a human to review. That matters, because a false flag on a real engineer costs you a hire and some reputation. Always look at the evidence before you act on a flag.

Yes, especially for remote engineering roles. Fakes target jobs that are fully remote, well paid and have short hiring loops, which describes most seed and Series A engineering roles. The DOJ's June 2025 action found more than 100 US companies that hired North Korean IT workers through remote jobs.

A good agency or recruiter screens people before they reach you, which cuts fraud but costs far more per hire than any tool here. Compare options in our lists of the best recruiting agencies for startups and the best AI recruiters for startups.
