Founded in 1866, The Floating Hospital, is one of the last remaining charity hospitals in New York City. We welcome individuals of all ages, from infants, school-age children (5+), youth and adults. The Floating Hospital is a Federally Qualified Health Center and the largest provider to homeless families living in family shelters and domestic violence safe houses throughout all five boroughs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patient Care:

  • Assist the Optometrist with patient care and eye examinations.
  • Screen patients and take medical history.
  • Administer eyedrops as directed by the Optometrist.
  • Provide patient education.
  • Assist with scheduling.
  • Clean, sanitize, and properly maintain equipment and exam rooms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Environment:

The Optometric Technician will perform duties in The Floating Hospital clinic and at shelters connected with the agency. The office is temperature-controlled and the noise level is kept to a minimum in accordance with professional office practices. The agency observes a no-smoking policy.

Requirements

Prior experience as an Optometric Technician preferred; strong attention to detail required; must be able to multitask; must have experience with EMR software; possess a pleasant demeanor and positive attitude when interacting with patients and staff; ability to speak Spanish or other languages preferable.
