Summary
The Operating Room/Surgical Technician performs direct patient care, scrubbing and assisting surgeon at the operative field during pre-, intra- and postoperative phase of surgical procedures. Assists with surgical room turnover between cases and collaborates with the Registered Nurse in clinical decision making. Understands safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel and patients. He/she can function in assigned areas of POSC as directed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in preparation of operating room and sterile field as directed by surgical procedure utilizing principles of aseptic technique.
- Provides physiological comfort and psychological support based on individual patient needs.
- Maintains awareness of intraoperative care to include but not limited to patient identification, site/procedure verification, airway management, fire safety, and specimen collection.
- Maintains surgical counts with circulating nurse and reports corrections and discrepancies.
- Assists with positioning and draping the surgical patient.
- Anticipates the surgeon's needs.
- Reports any breaks in technique for correction to the offender.
- Maintains awareness of surgical schedule progression and communicates pertinent delays and changes to team.
- Cares for specimens and cultures as directed.
- Assists in application of dressing, casts, and in moving of patient as directed.
- Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, supplies, and cleans room.
- Maintains a professional relationship with equipment/sales representatives
- Appropriately handles the disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Understands and performs proper technique of equipment in assigned work area.
- Adheres to POSC procedures, policies, and standards.
- Maintains area of Special Assignments.
- Responsible for training new employees.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program required.
- Experience in Materials Management in surgical setting desired.
- Surgical Technologist with one or more years’ experience preferred.
- Certification in Surgical Technology preferred.
- BLS certification required.
- This position requires involvement in preparation of State and AAAHC Surveys.
- Surgical Technician certification preferred.
- BLS rectification required.

The employee frequently is required to move all extremities within full range of motion as well as stoop and bend at 90 degrees. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. This is a full-time position. This position may require long hours.
