POSITION SUMMARY

The Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing stop loss and level-funded medical risk opportunities. This role independently manages an assigned block of business, supports profitable growth, communicates underwriting decisions, and operates within established underwriting authority and governance frameworks.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Underwrite new business and renewal applications, assessing risk to determine appropriate terms, pricing and conditions.
  • Analyze census data, claims history, plan design and other risk characteristics to develop informed underwriting decisions.
  • Develop competitive quotes and communicate terms, rationale and conditions to sales teams, brokers and partners.
  • Manage an assigned book of business, consistently meeting turnaround times and service-level standards.
  • Document underwriting rationale thoroughly to ensure compliance and audit readiness.
  • Support modernization efforts, reporting enhancements and process improvement initiatives.
  • Partner cross-functionally with actuarial, operations and sales teams to support business objectives.
  • Apply sound judgment and risk assessment within established underwriting authority levels.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • 3+ years of underwriting experience in stop loss, level-funded, or employee benefits insurance
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to translate data into sound underwriting decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey rationale to brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders
  • Proven ability to independently manage a book of business, prioritizing competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • A self-starter who takes ownership of outcomes and follows through with minimal oversight
