  • Manage infrastructure definitions, scripts, and configuration artifacts in Git with peer review, testing, and controlled promotion through CI/CD pipelines.
  • Create standard build patterns, runbooks, checklists, and self-service capabilities that reduce manual effort and improve consistency across environments.

AI-Enabled Engineering & Skillsets of the Future

  • Apply enterprise-approved Claude, OpenAI, and Microsoft Copilot capabilities to assist with scripting, troubleshooting, log and configuration analysis, documentation, knowledge retrieval, and operational decision support; validate outputs before production use.
  • Design and maintain reusable AI skills, prompts, agents, and workflow automations that encode infrastructure standards, improve repeatability, and reduce repetitive engineering work.
  • Use Model Context Protocol (MCP), REST APIs, and secure tool integrations to connect AI assistants and agents with approved observability, ITSM, CMDB, source-control, and infrastructure automation platforms using least privilege, auditable actions, and human approval for material changes.
  • Evaluate AI-enabled workflows for accuracy, security, maintainability, and operational value; document guardrails and measure improvements in cycle time, quality, and toil reduction.

Capacity, Health & Utilization Management

  • Conduct routine platform health checks and baseline assessments across physical, virtual, and cloud compute, operating systems, and supporting components to identify performance constraints, configuration drift, risk, and improvement opportunities.
  • Analyze CPU, memory, storage, network, hypervisor, and cloud-resource utilization trends; identify overcommitted, underutilized, idle, or aging resources and recommend right-sizing, consolidation, optimization, or decommissioning.
  • Develop dashboards, alerts, automated health checks, capacity forecasts, and actionable recommendations that improve utilization, preserve service headroom, and support demand planning.
  • Partner with application, cloud, platform, and service owners to balance performance, resiliency, growth, and cost while tracking optimization actions through completion.

Reliability, Performance & Resilience

  • Engineer high-availability and recovery patterns; support disaster recovery testing, failover exercises, and remediation of readiness gaps for critical services.
  • Analyze performance, availability, and configuration trends; proactively address risks before they affect business applications or service commitments.
  • Define and track operational measures for availability, change success, incident recovery, resiliency, and automation effectiveness, using results to prioritize improvements.

Security, Patching & Lifecycle Management

  • Implement secure configuration baselines, access controls, vulnerability remediation, and audit evidence in partnership with Cybersecurity, Risk, and platform owners.
  • Coordinate and automate operating system and infrastructure component patching, including pre-checks, maintenance windows, validation, exception handling, and rollback.
  • Maintain platform currency by identifying and remediating end-of-life and end-of-support operating systems and components through upgrades, migration, replacement, or decommissioning.

Observability & Operational Excellence

  • Integrate infrastructure services with monitoring, logging, metrics, and dashboards to provide actionable visibility into health, performance, capacity, patch status, and risk.
  • Develop health and utilization checks, automated validation, alerting, and operational guardrails that detect failures, saturation, or configuration drift before they impact dependent services.
  • Reduce alert noise, manual intervention, and recurring operational toil by converting repetitive support activities into durable engineering and automation solutions.

Change, Incident & Problem Management

  • Plan and execute infrastructure changes in accordance with enterprise change, release, and risk processes, with clear implementation, validation, and backout plans.
  • Participate in on-call support and lead technical triage for infrastructure incidents, restoring service quickly and communicating status and risk to stakeholders.
  • Perform root-cause analysis, document corrective actions, and convert recurring issues into engineering, automation, monitoring, or process improvements.

Partner & Deliver Across Teams

  • Collaborate with Application, Cloud, Network, Database, Security, SRE, Architecture, and vendor teams to deliver infrastructure solutions and resolve cross-platform issues.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into practical designs, estimates, implementation plans, support models, and lifecycle roadmaps.
  • Provide technical guidance, review peer work, document reusable patterns, and mentor less-experienced engineers in infrastructure engineering, responsible AI-assisted engineering, and operations practices.

Qualifications

  • 5-8+ years of experience in enterprise infrastructure engineering, systems administration, platform engineering, or production operations supporting mission-critical environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Windows Server and/or Linux in large-scale environments, including:
