About the position: As a Lab Scientist/Technical Specialist at Madison Health, you will be responsible for the day-to-day efficiency of the department when the Director is unavailable, ensuring that specimens are collected according to policy, tests are run and reported expeditiously, meeting all QA standards, policies and procedures. You will share in the workload of the specific section and assists in the development of coworker's technical skills. In addition, you will be responsible for performing specimen collection, processing, testing and resulting in accordance with laboratory policy and procedure manual. Performs quality control, maintenance, and calibrations for all analytical testing. Assist in collection of Chain-of-Custody Urine Drug Screens, Breath Alcohol Testing and Hair samples for Occupational Health.
  This position is Day Shift with rotating weekends and holidays.  

Key job qualities/duties:

  • Performs specimen collection on patients across the age spectrum.  Obtains blood and non-blood specimens for laboratory testing.  Follows all laboratory policies and procedures for patient identification and sample collection.
  • Verifies all lab orders.  Completes order entry in Laboratory Information System (LIS) and web based portal for Managed Care specimens.
  • Performs routine and special laboratory tests.  Follows all laboratory policies and procedures for laboratory testing.  Calls critical results to healthcare providers.
  • Adheres to quality control policies and procedures. Identifies possible problems that may adversely affect test results and corrects them or notifies supervisor.  Reviews orders, results and quality control for accuracy and completeness.
  •  Maintains clinical instrumentation.  Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting.  Reviews quality control results and documentation to perform calibration procedures.  Performs correlations between instruments according to laboratory policy.
  • Performs specimen collection for Occupational Health as needed including Chain-of-Custody Urine Drug Screens, Breath Alcohol Tests and Hair samples.
  • Coordinates training for new colleagues in specialty area and oversees progress.  Reviews section policies and procedures.  Assists with proficiency assignments, entering proficiency results in the appropriate system, and following up regarding proficiency results.   Responsible for providing   feedback to supervisor regarding colleague performance in specific technical areas.
  • Serves as a resource for technical information.   Assists with the inventory and ordering of supplies. Assists with department PI, Joint Commission and CAP checklists.

What qualifications are we looking for?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field.
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification required.
