Responsibilities

Lead the development and application of advanced computational modelling for functional and electrochemical materials to support sustainable energy technologies. The role involves conducting world-leading research, securing external funding, and leading teaching activities across BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.

Requirements

Candidates must possess an outstanding record of original scientific research in computational materials science and a proven track record of academic cross-disciplinary collaboration. Required qualifications include extensive experience in teaching coordination and the ability to attract funding from public and private sources.

Full job description

The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy) invites applications for a position as a full professor in computational modelling of functional and electrochemical materials for sustainable energy technologies.

As our new professor, you will be among about 300 inspiring colleagues in the department, located centrally at DTU Lyngby Campus, in the Copenhagen area. One of our core values is cooperation, and we believe we achieve world-class results together. Your research leadership is of utmost importance, and therefore, you are an empathetic role model who fosters and nurtures inspiring environments, e.g., by inclusion and openness. We strive for a decent work-life balance.

Responsibilities and qualifications
As our new professor, you will take a leading role in the development and application of advanced computational modelling approaches for functional and electrochemical materials relevant to sustainable energy technologies. The position aims to strengthen and expand DTU Energy’s internationally recognized activities in computational materials science across electronic, atomistic, mesoscopic, and multiscale levels. We have extensive state-of-the-art computational and experimental research infrastructures available for you, and DTU provides access to high-performance computing resources.

Research activities may include first-principles simulations, electronic-structure theory, computational electrochemistry, multiscale and phase-field modelling, data-driven and AI-assisted materials modelling, and modelling of coupled electrochemical, structural, magnetic, and mechanical phenomena. The successful candidate is expected to develop internationally leading research on functional and electrochemical materials and their emergent behaviour across length and time scales.

The materials and systems of interest include, but are not limited to, functional oxides, electrocatalysts, electrochemical interfaces, batteries, solid-state ionic materials, materials for electrolysis and carbon capture, and other advanced materials relevant for sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. The activities should be carried out in strong interplay with ongoing and future activities within the Department and DTU.

You appreciate collaboration with colleagues and actively contribute to interdisciplinary research environments by combining fundamental modelling with materials functionality and technological relevance. You are expected to interact closely with both computational and experimental researchers and contribute to bridging modelling with materials characterization, synthesis, and device-oriented activities.

We seek an outstanding candidate to strengthen and develop a vigorous, independent research area with interests in developing materials and technologies for use in society, which lead to sustainable solutions that can enable the green transition globally. You have demonstrated top-level, original scientific research in computational modelling of functional and electrochemical materials, spanning fundamental materials phenomena, multiscale behaviour, and sustainable energy applications. You will be a strong contributor to DTU Energy’s vision of demonstrating world-leading cross-disciplinary research through innovative development of sustainable materials solutions for the green transition, and you will initiate and inspire collaborations with colleagues within the Department, as well as across and outside DTU, including enterprises in Denmark, Europe, and beyond. We expect you to take part in the creation of spin-outs from DTU. We expect that you have a strong international network and a strong collaborative experience.

You have demonstrated a strong ability to attract external funding from public and private sources to conduct research at the highest international level. Dissemination of the research - both to scientific peers and to decision-makers in the public domain - is an important responsibility.

As a successful candidate for the full professorship, you are able to document:

  • Outstanding, original scientific output
  • Successful teaching, teaching coordination, and dissemination experience
  • A strong background in, and an innovative approach to, computational modelling of functional and electrochemical materials
  • A track record of academic cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • Teaching and teaching coordination experiences at the BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels.

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching, teaching coordination, and curriculum development
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including collaboration with industry and involvement in spin-outs
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
