About this role

Systems Engineer - Enterprise Application Systems

Description & Requirements

The Bloomberg Enterprise Application Systems team within the Bloomberg Engineering Department is responsible for the administration, engineering and technical operation of enterprise applications supporting Bloomberg’s internal business functions.

Our team manages primarily third-party enterprise applications running across both on-premise and cloud environments. These systems support a broad range of Bloomberg business functions, including Accounting, Supply Chain, Workplace Operations and others. We are responsible for the administration, reliability, security and resilience of these platforms, as well as their integration with other Bloomberg systems and external services.

We work closely with application development, database, Linux, Windows, networking, security and other infrastructure teams to provide secure, highly available and well-engineered enterprise application services.

The Role

As a Systems Engineer on the Enterprise Application Systems team, you will take technical ownership of enterprise application platforms throughout their lifecycle.

A key responsibility of this role is the administration of Bloomberg’s PeopleSoft environment, which supports North American Payroll. We are looking for someone with strong PeopleSoft systems administration expertise who can independently operate and evolve the platform.

You will own the administration of the PeopleSoft environment, including installation and configuration, upgrades, patching, environment management, monitoring, troubleshooting, security, integrations and production support.

Reliability and resilience are fundamental parts of the role. You will help design, implement and maintain highly available systems, including redundancy, backup and recovery, disaster recovery capabilities and operational procedures. You will work to identify potential points of failure, improve system recoverability and ensure that critical applications can continue operating through infrastructure and application failures.

Security is also an important part of owning these platforms. You will monitor vendor and internal security advisories, assess vulnerabilities affecting the software you support and ensure that required patches, upgrades or other remediations are implemented promptly. You will also be responsible for application security components including authentication and access controls, certificates and secrets, network connectivity and secure integration with other systems.

PeopleSoft will be an important part of the role, but it will represent approximately half of your overall responsibilities. You will cross-train with other members of the team and take ownership of additional third-party enterprise applications, both on-premise and in the cloud, supporting business areas across Bloomberg.

As the application portfolio evolves, you will be expected to develop expertise in new platforms and apply the same disciplines around administration, security, integration, automation, monitoring, resilience and lifecycle management across the systems you own.

You will need to have:

Strong hands-on experience administering PeopleSoft and PeopleTools environments
Experience administering core PeopleSoft infrastructure including WebLogic, Tuxedo, Application Server, Process Scheduler and Integration Broker
Experience independently managing enterprise application platforms, including installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, monitoring and production support
Experience identifying and remediating software vulnerabilities, including evaluating vendor security advisories and applying patches or other mitigations in a timely manner
Experience designing and operating highly available and resilient application environments
Understanding of redundancy, backup and recovery, disaster recovery and business continuity concepts
Strong troubleshooting skills across application, operating system, database, network and integration layers
Working knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems, relational databases, networking and application infrastructure
Experience supporting application integrations using technologies such as REST APIs, SFTP, S3 and other file-based interfaces
Understanding of enterprise application security, including authentication, certificates, secrets and secure connectivity
Experience developing scripts or automation for application administration, monitoring, maintenance and operational activities
The ability and interest to learn new technologies and take ownership of systems beyond PeopleSoft
Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across application, infrastructure and security teams

We would love to see:

Experience with PeopleSoft lifecycle and change-management tools such as PUM, Change Assistant and Phire
Experience administering multiple third-party enterprise application platforms
Experience supporting applications across both on-premise and cloud environments
Experience with public cloud or SaaS enterprise application platforms
Experience with Python, PowerShell, shell scripting or other automation technologies
Experience with enterprise monitoring, observability, secrets management or identity and access management technologies
Experience designing or testing disaster recovery and high-availability architectures
* Experience working with software vendors on upgrades, security issues, technical support and product lifecycle management
