Full job description
Salary/Position Classification
$15.00 hourly, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
10-15 hours per week
100% Remote Work Availability: No
Hybrid Work Availability (requires some time on campus): No
Purpose of Position
This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position with work-study eligibility.
This position will be an integral member of the Chester Fritz Library (CFL) Learning Lab team. The Learning Lab is a hands-on, experiential learning space in the library where students, faculty, and community members can develop skills utilizing technologies and equipment for making, designing, prototyping, and recording — including large-format art printers, vacuum-forming machines, fabric arts machines, laser and vinyl cutters, and audio and video production equipment. The Learning Lab team keeps this collection running, growing, and understandable to the people who walk in and want to try it. Successful candidates will be flexible and able to support all roles but based on experience and interests, some student assistants may spend more time on support of equipment, documentation, or patron support. Applicants are not required to already be experts on the equipment but will be expected to become literate across the technologies and equipment.
The successful candidates will be curious, patient, and comfortable learning new hardware and software by reading, trying, and asking questions. They will bring careful attention to detail, take initiative, and communicate clearly in writing and in person, and they will work well both independently and on a team. Relevant experience may come from coursework, personal projects, or hobbies in fields such as music production, studio art, engineering, computer science, or design — but no particular background or major is required. There will be opportunities to shape how new tools and equipment are introduced to patrons.
Work schedule and work hours will be shaped by the needs of the services, but some flexibility will be available. Summer hours may be available.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide assistance and troubleshooting support to patrons in the Learning Lab and Recording Studio
Research, set up, and test new equipment as it arrives
Write clear equipment descriptions, quick-start guides, and how-to materials
Help maintain, organize, and inventory equipment and the space
Includes day and evening hours
Other projects as assigned
Required Competencies
Applicants must be motivated, have close attention to detail, be comfortable learning new hardware and software through trial and documentation, be able to work independently and in a team environment, and be able to meet deadlines
Must be able to effectively teach others in a one-on-one space
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must be a current UND student (any discipline) and enrolled at UND for the Fall 2026 semester
Must have accepted a Federal Work Study award from the Office of Student Finance
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not support visa sponsorship for continued employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with technical or creative work — through coursework, personal projects, or hobbies in areas such as engineering, music, art, or design — is a plus.
Experience writing instructional or how-to documentation for technical processes.
Hands-on experience with maker/fabrication equipment (3D printers, laser/vinyl cutters, vacuum-forming, fabric arts machines).
Experience with audio or video production/recording equipment.
Experience tutoring, TAing, or providing one-on-one technical instruction.
To Apply
For full consideration, applications must be received by the closing date and include the following materials:
Resume
A cover letter explaining why you are interested in this position and why you believe you would be successful
Please include in the application if you are currently or have in the past 12 months been employed with the University of North Dakota, the North Dakota University System or any other North Dakota State agency. If so, include which agency/department, as well as how many hours you work a week.
