50 Years of Service
In 1973, a group of parents who had children with disabilities envisioned a place where their loved ones could find purpose, friendship, and community. These parents, mostly mothers, came together to form Las Madrinas, an auxiliary group that raised funds for the Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped (SFH) in Scottsdale, AZ. The organization's early days saw them operating out of borrowed space, making quilts, and utilizing Mary King's sewing machine.
But STARS mission and services have evolved significantly over the years. Today, STARS offers a full range of programming, including training and support designed to help participants achieve full-time, inclusive employment and day training programs to help make each day have purpose. The organization has grown to operate out of two locations in Scottsdale, and its services now extend valley-wide.
