Full job description

Who we are

At ProFood, we're building Infrastructure for Better Food. We are an international owner-developer specializing in real estate for food-focused businesses. We build and manage the entire spectrum of food production and distribution real estate.

Since 2019, we have built, leased and managed over 5M square feet of space for food production, processing, storage and distribution.

Our development approach is based on a deep understanding of the needs of food businesses, as well as the design and engineering principles required to build and operate complex production facilities

What you’ll do

We are seeking a Structural Engineer to support the design, evaluation, and execution of our facility development projects. As part of our vertically integrated engineering team, you will be responsible for assessing existing structures, developing structural strategies, coordinating with consultants, and driving efficient, cost-effective solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects.

This role is heavily focused on adaptive reuse and renovation projects, requiring engineers who can quickly understand existing building behavior, identify constraints, and develop practical structural solutions that support operational requirements while minimizing construction costs and schedule impacts.

You will work closely with Architecture, Mechanical, Plumbing, Civil, Geotechnical, Construction, and Development teams to develop structural concepts that are safe, constructable, scalable, and economical.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural due diligence assessments on existing buildings to evaluate:
    • Gravity load systems
    • Lateral force resisting systems
    • Existing foundations
    • Structural deficiencies and deterioration
    • Capacity for proposed occupancies and equipment loads
  • Identify compromised structural elements including:
    • Corrosion
    • Material degradation
    • Settlement
    • Overstressed members
    • Inadequate historical modifications
  • Develop structural strategies for integrating new facility requirements into existing buildings.
  • Determine structural strengthening requirements for:
    • Gravity systems
    • Lateral systems
    • Foundations
    • Equipment support structures
  • Develop foundation concepts and design strategies for new and existing facilities.
  • Analyze building load paths and identify critical structural elements that influence project feasibility and cost.
  • Coordinate structural requirements with architectural layouts, mechanical equipment loads, plumbing infrastructure, civil improvements, and geotechnical recommendations.
  • Review and provide technical guidance to external consultants and Engineers of Record (EORs) throughout design development and construction documentation phases.
  • Support permitting efforts and coordinate with Building Departments and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Participate in value engineering exercises to reduce construction costs, simplify construction methods, and accelerate project delivery.
  • Contribute to the development of structural design standards, prototype details, and scalable engineering solutions across the organization.

Role Focus

Approximately:

  • 25% Due diligence and structural assessments
  • 25% Structural strategy and basis-of-design development
  • 30% Consultant management and design reviews
  • 20% Research, development, standardization, and innovation

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5–8 years of structural engineering experience in commercial, industrial, institutional, or mixed-use projects.
  • Strong experience evaluating and modifying existing buildings.
  • Experience with adaptive reuse, renovations, retrofits, tenant improvements, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Load paths
    • Gravity systems
    • Lateral force resisting systems
    • Foundation systems
    • Structural dynamics
    • Seismic design
    • Wind design
  • Ability to determine structural adequacy for proposed building uses while balancing operational requirements, schedule constraints, and budget objectives.
  • Experience with steel, concrete, masonry, timber, and light-gauge framing systems.
  • Strong understanding of material behavior and structural mechanics.
  • Familiarity with historic structures and legacy construction techniques.
  • Experience producing structural calculations, technical reports, and construction documentation.
  • Understanding of construction sequencing, site logistics, access constraints, staging, and constructability.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work across multiple engineering disciplines.

Technical Expertise

Candidates should possess working knowledge of:

  • ASCE 7
  • ACI 318
  • AISC Steel Construction Manual
  • AISC Seismic Provisions
  • NDS for Wood Construction
  • TMS/ACI Masonry Design Standards
  • International Building Code (IBC)
  • Local building code requirements in major metropolitan jurisdictions

Nice to Have

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license.
  • Experience with modular construction and prefabrication strategies.
  • Experience with seismic retrofits and historic building rehabilitation.
  • Experience working with high-volume real estate development organizations.
  • Revit experience and familiarity with BIM workflows.
  • Construction cost estimating experience.
  • Experience working directly with AHJs and permit review agencies.
