Department: 500 - Processing

Reports To: Shift Supervisor; Plant Manager

Direct Reports: Processing Workers & Operators

Job Summary: The Processing Shift Lead supports the Shift Supervisor/Plant Management Team in coordinating daily operations during a designated shift. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for assigning tasks, monitoring workflow, supporting team members, and ensuring that production goals are met safely and efficiently. 

Key Responsibilities (others may be assigned as business needs dictate):

  • Understand, uphold, and communicate regularly the Company’s vision, mission and core values.
  • Maintain strict adherence to all Company policies, processes and procedures in accordance with the Employee Manual, the Safety Manual, and The Animal Food Safety Plan.
  • Serves as the go-to person for team members during the shift.
  • Operate and train others on fork truck certification and yard spotter certification.
  • Support training of new employees and coach team members in best practices.
  • Responsible for relieving a supervisor in the circumstance they are not able to come in or must leave early. 
  • Assist with minor troubleshooting and escalate operational issues to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Ensure proper documentation of production activity, timekeeping, and handovers.
  • Promote a positive, team-oriented work environment.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in accordance with company policies.
  • Attend all Company meetings and trainings as directed by management.
  • Pursue and recommend industry and leadership development training programs for review. 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, preferred; technical training, associate degree, or equivalent experience in manufacturing, processing, or operations a plus.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a manufacturing, processing, warehouse, or production environment.
  • Previous lead, team lead, trainer, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate employees in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Ability to perform production and material handling duties while providing hands-on leadership and support.
  • Forklift certification, preferred; or ability to obtain (re)certification within established company timeframes.
  • Yard Spotter certification required or ability to obtain certification within established company timeframes.
  • Working knowledge of workplace safety regulations, food safety practices, quality standards, and operational procedures.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and complete production records, logs, reports, and other operational documentation.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency with timekeeping, production reporting, email, and other business software applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and shift coverage as needed.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

Physical Requirements/Abilities:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, kneel, climb stairs, and perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to safely operate industrial equipment, including forklifts, yard spotters, and other material handling equipment after successful completion of required training and certification.
  • Ability to work around moving machinery and equipment while maintaining awareness of surroundings and following all safety protocols.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers for grasping, handling, and operating tools, controls, and computer equipment.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to understand work instructions, safety procedures, production documentation, and team communications.
  • Ability to visually inspect products, equipment, and work areas to identify quality, safety, and operational issues.
  • Ability to hear and respond to verbal instructions, alarms, warning signals, and other workplace communications.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and shift coverage as needed to support business operations.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily in a processing facility with regular exposure to machinery, moving equipment, forklifts, and production operations.
  • Frequent exposure to extreme varying temperatures, humidity levels, dust, odors, noise, and outdoor weather conditions when working in production, warehouse, or yard areas.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), which may include non-slip safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and other equipment as required by company policy.
  • Environment may involve exposure to raw materials (dairy), finished animal feed products, and ingredients used in the manufacturing process.
  • Position requires adherence to all food safety, quality assurance, biosecurity, and workplace safety requirements.
  • This is a hands-on leadership position that requires regular presence on the production floor to monitor operations, provide direction, and support team members.
  • Occasional work in confined spaces, elevated work areas, or outdoor locations may be required in accordance with safety procedures and training.
