About the Role
Curtin College is seeking a teaching-focused Academic to contribute to teaching, curriculum development, and student success within the Humanities Program.
The role involves teaching and coordinating units in academic communication, academic literacy, research and writing, and related humanities areas. The successful applicant will support students in developing academic writing, research, critical thinking, referencing, communication, and independent learning skills within a first-year and ESL/EAL pathway education context.
The Academic will coordinate and deliver units, contribute to curriculum and assessment development, support sessional staff, participate in moderation and quality assurance processes, and monitor student progress and engagement. The role also includes supporting students at risk and contributing to an inclusive learning environment that supports a successful transition to university study.
Working collaboratively with the Program Manager and academic colleagues, the Academic will contribute to program review, academic governance, and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with institutional and university standards.
Key Responsibilities
Unit Coordination and Teaching
Coordinate and deliver engaging learning experiences aligned with unit learning outcomes, institutional standards, and AQF requirements.
Teach across academic communication, academic literacy, research and writing, and humanities-related units.
Embed academic literacy, communication, and critical thinking development within teaching and learning activities.
Develop and review curriculum, learning materials, and assessment resources to support student engagement and transition to university study.
Support consistent unit delivery across campuses and provide guidance to casual teaching staff.
Assessment and Quality Assurance
Design, implement, and review assessment tasks aligned with unit learning outcomes, university standards and AQF requirements.
Coordinate moderation, validation, grading, and academic reporting processes in accordance with institutional requirements.
Manage assessment-related queries and academic integrity matters in line with institutional policies.
Contribute to curriculum review, quality assurance, and continuous improvement activities.
Student Support and Engagement
Monitor student engagement and academic progress, identifying and supporting students at risk.
Provide timely academic guidance, feedback, and referral to support students where appropriate.
Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment for diverse student cohorts.
Support students’ transition to higher education and independent learning.
Program Contribution
Collaborate with the Program Manager and academic staff on curriculum development, program review, and academic quality processes.
Participate in academic governance, committee work, and reporting activities as required.
Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to collaborative teaching practices within the Humanities Program.
Qualifications
Selection Criteria
Essential:
A postgraduate qualification (or higher) in Applied Linguistics, Communication, Education, or a closely related discipline.
A minimum of two years’ teaching experience in higher education or tertiary pathway education at AQF Level 5 or above.
Demonstrated ability to support students’ academic literacy, communication, and critical thinking development within teaching practice.
Experience teaching academic communication, research and writing, humanities, or related units.
Demonstrated experience coordinating units and supporting consistent teaching and assessment practices across teaching teams.
Demonstrated experience contributing to curriculum development, review, and continuous improvement initiatives, including assessment and learning resource design, within higher education or pathway education contexts.
Sound understanding of assessment design, moderation, academic integrity, and quality assurance processes within higher education.
Strong digital capability, including experience using learning technologies such as Moodle (or similar LMS), Turnitin, and Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to support the ethical and effective use of Generative AI and emerging learning technologies within teaching and learning contexts.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and manage competing priorities effectively.
Commitment to student-centred, inclusive, and culturally responsive teaching practices that support diverse learner cohorts, including ESL/EAL students.
Desirable:
A teaching qualification or professional development in TESOL, ESL/EAL, academic literacy, higher education teaching, or a related area.
Familiarity with AQF Level 5 requirements, the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021, ESOS Act 2000, and the National Code 2018.
Experience supporting first-year transition and student success initiatives within higher education.
Experience contributing to curriculum review, contextualisation, or continuous improvement initiatives within a higher education setting.
