MENTAL HEALTH ADVISOR

The Mental Health Advisor (MHA) provides culturally-informed counseling/psychotherapy, education, support, coaching, and case management services for university students through our Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) office. He/she/they also develops and implements mental health education programs, and provides consultation services and training for students, faculty, and staff. The MHA must have a sophisticated understanding of the role of culture in higher education, and extensive skills in effectively serving a highly diverse and international student community.

This position has two, 4-month contract periods, from late August to mid-December, and then from early January to the end of April. It is a part-time position (average 16 hr/week; 280 hr/term) and pays $14,000 USD per 4-month contract term ($28,000 USD total for the year). Our ideal candidate will be able to start in mid-August, resides in Tokyo, and is interested in becoming a longer term member of the CAPS team since the terms can be recurring. The majority of the hours are on site in our residence hall in Shinagawa, although some remote hours are possible. Services are provided both in person and through telehealth.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Meeting with students to understand their mental health needs and goals, and provide services toward those needs and goals in several forms:
  • Direct psychotherapy/counseling, education, support, and coaching interventions
  • Connection to auxiliary psychotherapeutic services
  • Referrals to other Minerva or community supports
  • Assessing students who may have urgent mental health needs, and connecting them to additional services
  • Collaborate with other Minerva staff to coordinate care related to student mental health
  • Scheduling initial and follow up appointments
  • Being a consistent point of contact for students related to mental health across their academic career
  • Occasional urgent service and coordination with hospitals

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) in a mental health field (clinical / counseling psychology, clinical social work, mental health counseling, etc).
  • Skills, experience, and interest in providing mental health services to a highly diverse, international community; exceptional awareness of intercultural dynamics
  • Ability to work semi-independently while providing services to students
  • Strong technology skills (email, telehealth platforms, electronic record keeping and scheduling software, Slack, Google products, etc)
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work as part of a larger team that is geographically dispersed
  • Exceptional safety assessment and crisis stabilization skills, particularly related to situations with geographic distance
  • Ability for occasional international travel
  • Fluency in English
  • Ability to work legally in Japan
  • Residing in Tokyo, within a one hour commute to the residence hall in Shinagawa
  • Being a citizen of the world who cares about human development and is motivated by the potential for positive global change

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Clinical Psychologist license or equivalent credentials
  • Experience working in a university counseling center
  • Fluency in multiple languages including Japanese
  • Experience working with students from communities that are underserved by traditional mental health services
  • Expertise in goal-focused support methods (solution focused, single session, motivational interviewing, etc)
  • Interest in becoming a long-term member of the CAPS team
