About the Role
Mental Health Kokua is seeking a part-time Kauhale Nurse to provide nursing support in a behavioral health shelter environment. This role supports residents with behavioral health and related challenges through safe medication practices, resident-centered communication, provider coordination, and timely response to medical or psychiatric concerns.
Key Responsibilities
MaintainaccurateMedication Administration Records (MARs), including administration, refusals, discrepancies, and resident responses.
Support safe medication administration by verifying resident identity, medication orders, dosage, timing, and relevant clinical information.
Complete medication reconciliation after hospital discharge, new prescriptions, or medication changes.
Coordinate with the internal APRN-Rx, psychiatrists, primary care providers, pharmacies, hospitals, and interdisciplinary team members.
Communicate with residents in a respectful, trust-building manner to support medication understanding and adherence.
Respond to urgent situations such as suspected overdose, unresponsive residents, suicidal ideation, or medication-related emergencies.
Maintain HIPAA compliance, confidentiality, professional boundaries, andaccuratedocumentation.
Participate in care planning, team communication, audit readiness, and quality-improvement efforts related to resident safety.
Minimum Qualifications
Current RN or LPN license in good standing; Hawaii licensure or eligibility preferred.
Experience with medication administration, MAR documentation, medication safety, and medication reconciliation.
Ability to work with individuals experiencing serious mental illness, co-occurring disorders, homelessness, substance use disorders, trauma, or related behavioral health challenges.
Knowledge of HIPAA, confidentiality, nursing documentation, and professional boundaries.
Ability to communicate effectively with residents, providers, pharmacies, emergency responders, supervisors, and team members.
Sound judgment, calm crisis response, and ability to prioritize urgent clinical needs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in community behavioral health, shelter-based care, psychiatric nursing, substance use treatment, or hospital discharge coordination.
Experience with electronic medical records or medication dispensing documentation systems.
Interest in client advocacy, long-term community impact, and integrated behavioral health care.
Additionalbehavioral health or substance use training, including CSAC-related coursework or certification.
Working Environment
The Kauhale Nurse works in a shelter-based behavioral health setting. The role may involve stressful situations, emotional conflict, psychiatric symptoms, medication refusals, crisis events, and residents with complex medical, behavioral health, housing, or substance use needs.
