Field Manager, Nigeria

GiveWell ITN Monitoring Project | Nigeria | 2026–2027

About IDinsight

We amplify social impact by partnering with leaders to develop tailored solutions. Our mission is to improve lives with data and evidence. We transform how the world fights poverty.

IDinsight is a global nonprofit that equips leaders with the data, evidence and technology to improve lives at scale. We partner with governments, NGOs, multilaterals, and funders to support decisions at every stage of their impact journey – from bold pilots to nationwide scale-ups. Our teams bring rigorous evidence and practical insights so leaders can make informed decisions that truly change lives. With our partners, we are pioneering the next frontier of social impact, where data and technology accelerate progress for millions. We help leaders overcome the three main barriers to impact:

  1. Figuring out what works
  2. Learning and improving
  3. Reaching and operating at scale

We work in multiple countries across Asia and Africa. Our work spans a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, education, health, governance, sanitation, financial inclusion, and other areas.

We have expertise in a variety of rigorous approaches and methodologies, which we tailor to each client depending on their needs and constraints. To achieve a positive social impact we:

  • Support our partners with the full ‘data and evidence’ value chain – from primary data collection to data systems, monitoring evaluation and learning tools, and data science
  • Inform funding decisions – toward high-impact initiatives and away from less effective programs or approaches
  • Create cutting-edge AI-for-good products that make the delivery of social interventions and learning tools more cost-effective and scalable

Our diverse, growing team of roughly 250 outstanding colleagues operate in nearly two dozen countries around the world. Learn more about our mission, values, and principles at www.IDinsight.org.

About the Project

IDinsight has been engaged by GiveWell to serve as the primary independent monitoring firm for insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution campaigns funded by GiveWell and implemented by the Malaria Consortium across four Nigerian states: Borno, FCT, Abia, and Kogi. The project runs from May 2026 through December 2027 and includes household listing in the four states, a pre-distribution baseline in three states, one-month post-distribution monitoring surveys in all four states (the anchor deliverable), and twelve-month follow-up surveys (to be confirmed). Field implementation will be led by a vetted Nigerian survey partner, approved by State and National Ethics Review boards, with the IDinsight team providing technical oversight. The Field Manager is a central member of this team and will be the primary on-the-ground presence across survey waves.

About the Field Manager Role

The Field Manager will be the operational backbone of data collection across Nigeria's four project states. Working closely with IDinsight's project Associate and Manager, and embedded within the survey partner's field structure, the Field Manager will ensure that surveys are executed to IDinsight's quality standards: on time, in scope, and with rigorous data integrity. This is a demanding role that requires significant multi-state travel, strong people management skills, and the ability to navigate complex field conditions. This is a 6-month fixed-term contract which may be extended based on performance and project need.

Responsibilities

The Field Manager will be thoroughly trained in IDinsight research best practices. After training, his or her responsibilities include, but will not be limited to:

1. Research Preparation and Study Start-Up

  • Thoroughly understand and adhere to IDinsight study protocols across all survey waves (baseline, PDM-1, and tentatively PDM-12).
  • Support the finalization of data collection instruments, including review of household survey questionnaires for local appropriateness and clarity.
  • Coordinate and lead instrument piloting in each state, documenting issues and communicating feedback to the IDinsight project team.
  • Work with the project team and survey partner firm to confirm state-level field logistics, including cluster locations, local authority introductions, and community entry protocols.
  • Support the preparation of training materials and field protocols in coordination with IDinsight staff.
  • Complete the CITI certification for Social Behavioral studies.

2. Enumerator Training

  • Co-develop training materials and assessment tools with the IDinsight Associate and survey partner team.
  • Co-facilitate enumerator training sessions across states.
  • Conduct retraining of enumerators, if necessary

3. Data Collection Management

  • Serve as the primary operational coordinator between IDinsight and the survey partner during active data collection phases.
  • Coordinate with the IDinsight Associate on data collection timeline and plans
  • Establish regular communication schedules with the enumerator team.
  • Travel across project states during active survey waves; be prepared for extended periods away from home base.
  • Contribute to ensuring data quality through coaching, monitoring and checking enumerators; review data.
  • For Borno, operate under a partner-led model with clear security protocols; no IDinsight staff travel to Borno under the base case, but the FM will coordinate closely with the local partner and IDinsight on security compliance.

4. Survey Supervision and Data Quality Assurance

  • Supervise the survey partner's enumerator teams across all states, holding them accountable to IDinsight's data quality standards.
  • Conduct regular spot checks and back-checks against submitted interviews to detect data quality issues early.
  • Review incoming survey submissions daily in coordination with the IDinsight data quality team; flag anomalies, timing irregularities, and completeness issues.
  • Support audio audit and callback verification processes as directed by the IDinsight QA lead.
  • Submit daily field reports to the IDinsight Associate summarizing survey progress, data quality observations, and any operational incidents.
  • Conducting debriefs and sharing feedback with enumerators and supervisors: conduct daily debriefs based on spot checks, back checks, audio audits and the data quality issues shared the IDinsight team.
  • Document wave-end observations — including implementation issues, deviations from protocol, and lessons for subsequent rounds — in brief notes shared with the project team.
  • Where needed and exceptionally, conduct survey interviews directly to fill gaps or to verify data quality concerns.
  • Support community entry and maintain constructive working relationships with local government officials, community leaders, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Maintain clear documentation of field decisions and deviations from the original plan.

5. Data Processing Support

  • Assist in verifying cleaned datasets after each survey wave, flagging discrepancies or inconsistencies for the IDinsight data team.
  • Support documentation of field practices and data collection lessons for project knowledge management.

Qualifications

Required

  • A bachelor’s degree in a scientific or social science field
  • At least 4–6 years of experience in field data collection, survey operations, or research program coordination within the development sector in Nigeria.
  • Strong written and spoken English; fluency in Hausa strongly preferred, given field operations in Northern Nigeria (Borno, FCT, Kogi).
  • Experience working with Google Spreadsheets and digital data collection platforms (e.g., SurveyCTO, ODK, or similar CAPI tools).
  • Strong project management and logistics skills
  • Close attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously
  • Ability and willingness to work in challenging and uncertain conditions, including rural areas of the Nigeria
  • Confidence and willingness to work with Nigerians and foreigners, including giving and receiving direct feedback
  • Ability to coach and manage enumerators
  • Ability to work independently under time pressure while maintaining close communication with a remote project team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively across project states for extended periods during active survey waves.

Preferred

  • Prior experience working in Northern Nigeria, including complex-access environments.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, Nigeria's community entry protocols and local government structures relevant to household surveys.
  • Experience working on health-sector surveys, household surveys, or malaria-related programs in Nigeria.
  • Familiarity with GiveWell, Malaria Consortium, or similar global health funding and implementation partners.
  • Experience with two-stage cluster random sampling approaches and the operational demands they place on field teams.
  • Experience supporting ethics and IRB-related field compliance requirements.
  • Fluency in Igbo or Yoruba, in addition to Hausa and English, would be an advantage given the multi-state scope.

Nuts and Bolts

Location

The Field Manager will be based in Nigeria. The preferred base location is Abuja (FCT), given its proximity to multiple project states, though candidates from other major Nigerian cities will be considered. The role requires significant travel to and throughout Abia, Kogi, and FCT during active survey waves. All field travel and accommodation will be covered by IDinsight.

Contract Duration and Start Date

The project period runs from May 2026 through December 2027, with the most intensive field phases occurring from August to December 2026 (baseline and PDM-1) and July to October 2027 (PDM-12). The initial contract will be a fixed-term 6-month contract, with a decision in early 2027 on the continuation toward the PDM-12 survey round.

Work Authorization

Candidates must have existing authorization to work in Nigeria. IDinsight is not able to sponsor work authorization for this role.

Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience and is competitive within the international development sector. IDinsight offers comprehensive benefits including international health insurance (with mental health coverage), paid vacation, sick and parental leave, a professional development budget, and more.

Professional Development

Skill and career development are central to IDinsight's values. Field Managers receive meaningful mentorship from senior IDinsight staff, exposure to rigorous research methods, and regular feedback through both formal and informal channels. Teammates maintain professional development plans and are given stretch opportunities designed to build a variety of skills. All IDinsighters have access to an annual professional development stipend.
