About the Role:
The Senior Operations Supervisor serves as the senior leader for 1st shift operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and accurate execution of all distribution center activities. This role provides leadership to front-line supervisors and warehouse associates, drives operational excellence through continuous improvement, and serves as the primary escalation point for operational and customer service issues occurring during the shift.
The Senior Operations Supervisor is responsible for optimizing labor utilization, improving operational performance, supporting employee development, and maintaining a culture focused on safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. This position is accountable for the health and safety of team members under their supervision, ensuring equipment is maintained in safe working condition and employees comply with established safety policies and procedures.
What You'll Do
Team Leadership & Development
- Directly supervise the 1st shift operations team providing leadership and oversight.
- Serve as the senior operational leader on-site during opening hours.
- Act as the first point of escalation for operational, inventory, customer service, and employee issues.
- Partner with Human Resources on workforce planning, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and retention initiatives.
- Train, coach, mentor, and develop team members and supervisors through regular feedback and performance discussions.
- Conduct performance reviews and establish individual development plans.
- Identify and develop high-potential employees while supporting succession planning efforts.
- Foster a culture of accountability, engagement, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Address employee concerns promptly and professionally while promoting a positive work environment.
Warehouse Operations
- Oversee daily warehouse operations for the assigned shift, ensuring the safe and efficient flow of materials, inventory, and customer orders.
- Coordinate with Customer Service, Purchasing, Inventory Control, Shipping, and other departments to ensure seamless operations.
- Assign tasks and responsibilities to maximize productivity and service levels.
- Monitor inventory levels, inventory accuracy, order fulfillment performance, and workflow efficiencies.
- Optimize warehouse layout, space utilization, and material flow processes.
- Participate in strategic planning initiatives and contribute to long-term operational goals.
- Ensure proper staffing levels and labor allocation based on business demands.
- Maintain proficiency in warehouse management systems and operational technologies.
- Operate powered industrial equipment, as required and appropriately trained.
- Manage warehouse supply inventories and purchasing requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Performance Management
- Establish, monitor, and report key performance indicators (KPIs) related to:
- Safety
- Productivity
- Labor utilization
- Inventory accuracy
- Order accuracy
- On-time shipping performance
- Quality performance
- Overtime control
- Prepare and present operational reports and performance updates to leadership.
- Analyze operational data and trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Implement strategies to increase productivity, improve service levels, and reduce operational costs.
- Drive accountability for achieving established operational targets.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, inventory accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
- Lead root-cause investigations related to operational performance issues.
- Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Support Lean Six Sigma and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the facility.
- Standardize processes and share best practices to improve operational consistency.
Quality Management
- Ensure adherence to company quality standards, procedures, and customer requirements.
- Implement quality control measures that minimize errors and defects.
- Conduct regular quality audits and review performance metrics.
- Lead efforts to reduce customer-impacting errors and improve overall service quality.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to quality performance.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with all company safety policies and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct routine safety inspections, observations, and training sessions.
- Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment.
- Support and maintain compliance with ISO 9001 standards.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained and operated in accordance with established safety requirements.
Problem Solving & Decision Making
- Identify and resolve operational issues quickly and effectively.
- Troubleshoot inventory discrepancies, order fulfillment issues, and workflow challenges.
- Make sound operational decisions that support customer commitments and business objectives.
- Escalate significant issues to appropriate leadership when required.
- Use data and root-cause analysis techniques to drive sustainable solutions.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 4+ years of experience in warehouse, distribution, logistics, or manufacturing operations.
- 2+ years of leadership experience supervising hourly employees, team leads, and/or front-line supervisors.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent problem-solving, time management, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
- Experience utilizing Warehouse Management Systems (WMS); Exacta experience preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel & Teams.
- Ability to analyze operational data and leverage metrics to improve performance.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work in a warehouse environment, including standing, walking, climbing stairs, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Supply Chain, Operations Management, Logistics, or a related field.
- Experience working in an automated distribution environment utilizing WMS platforms, conveyors, and advanced material handling systems.
- Experience leading operations in a high-volume distribution or fulfillment center.
- Experience with receiving and kitting functions.
- Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Lean Warehousing, 5S, or Six Sigma principles.
- Relevant certifications in operations, logistics, supply chain management, or continuous improvement.
- Experience with ISO 9001 quality management systems.
- Experience with Exacta Warehouse Management System.
