Job Title: Lecturer - Business of Fashion

Employment type: Part-time (day) Lecturing Role

Job Summary

Applications are invited for a part-time lecturing role in the Faculty of Design. The module is a 5 ECTS credit module from the Faculty of Design, BA programme (Level 8) in Fashion Design. The teaching schedule runs over Semester 1, Weeks 1–12, Wednesdays, 10.00–11.30 am.

We are seeking a Lecturer who is enthusiastic and passionate not only about the Business of Fashion, fashion retail, and design, but also about sharing their knowledge with the next generation of designers. In this role, you will guide learners in critically analysing key industry issues and debates, as well as contemporary theories and discourses associated with the Business of Fashion and related practices. The successful candidate will inspire students to engage with current challenges and opportunities within their own design practice, while developing their ability to critically reflect on concepts and debates relevant to the Business of Fashion and design in both local and global contexts.

Required Qualifications

Candidates will be expected to have a Level 9 Qualification or equivalent in Fashion Business or in a cognate discipline such as Fashion Design; proven teaching excellence and ability to support curriculum development; demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to build relations and to work collaboratively. Membership of a relevant professional body and any record of research, scholarship and publications are an advantage.

• Having lecturing and relevant practice-based experience is an advantage.
• Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills.

• A keen interest and a broad knowledge of the subject area, including ethical trading, corporate social responsibility, sustainability and circular design.
• Up to date with guidelines related to the topic.
• To design, develop and produce learning and teaching material and deliver the module.
• Lecturers will ensure the efficient and effective delivery of teaching programmes in accordance with the College strategy, policy and procedures, contribute to activities which influence leading edge practice and may also undertake research activity.
• Have experience of working in a positive, flexible manner.
• Willing to arrange student trips and site visits.
• Have experience of openly exchanging information and supporting colleagues.

Business of Fashion Module Descriptor (Semester 1, Level 8, 5 ECTS):

The module aims to provide learners with a broad understanding of how the fashion industry operates by examining sectors ranging from couture to mass production, as well as the schedules, processes, and roles involved. It also explores the factors that shape and drive the fashion industry, including the fashion calendar, the International Colour Authority (ICA), trend forecasting agencies, technology, and fast fashion.

The module objectives are for learners to develop an understanding of the social and environmental impact of the fashion industry, including its problems and challenges. The module highlights how ethical and circular design are now key driving forces for many brands. Learners will investigate and critically evaluate how fashion brands are restructuring to implement ethical trading, corporate social responsibility, and positive environmental change in support of a more sustainable fashion industry.

Guidelines for Mock Lecture

As part of the interview process, candidates are required to give a 5 – 10 minute mock lecture, regarding the interview panel as students. The lecture should cover an item (or items) of the candidate’s choice from an existing (or proposed) course offered by the Faculty or Department. The candidate is free to use whatever medium and teaching aids are appropriate, including a laptop and projector, and is encouraged to use new technology.

The lecture should not be the first lecture in a course, nor should it be an overview of a course. The lecture will focus on explaining a particular aspect of the course to students who are unfamiliar with the topic. The lecturer should begin by outlining any previous information that the students are expected to know (e.g. “I’m assuming you know how to ...... which we covered last week”). Questions will be asked of the lecturer, either during or after the lecture.
