Forensicare:

Forensicare (Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health) is Victoria’s specialist provider of forensic mental health services. We deliver recovery-focused programs that support consumers living with serious mental illness or problematic behaviours who are connected to, or at risk of contact with, the justice system, across a variety of settings including community-based services, inpatient units, and secure environments throughout Victoria.

Prison services:

We provide mental health services in prisons across Victoria. We strive to provide the same standard of services and care to people in prisons that anyone else experiencing mental illness can access at an areamental health service.  Melbourne Assessment Prison is a 16-bed acute assessment unit, specialist clinics,
outpatient services and a reception assessment program. Our work in prisons includes:

  • triage
  • on-site assessments
  • ongoing clinical care and support
  • harm prevention and crisis interventions
  • outpatient clinics and episodic care
  • inpatient teams
  • rehabilitation and transition to community programs.

Position objective:

In Victoria, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is defined as “a registered nurse educated for advanced practice who is an essential member of an interdependent health care team and whose role is determined by the context in which (they) practice.” The position is responsible to the Clinical Director (or delegate) for the standard of extensions to practice. The NP practices with autonomy within an interdisciplinary framework to maximise access to expert forensic mental health nursing care to promote recovery and optimum outcomes for prisoners experiencing mental illness.

The main components of the role are:

  • Expert assessment – holistic mental health and risk assessments.
  • Advocacy and access – ensuring timely access to appropriate mental health care and treatment
  • Managing risk – applying risk management principles within a custodial setting.
  • Complex mental health care and treatment – specialised interventions with highly complex and behaviourally challenging prisoners.
  • Transition planning – facilitating successful transition from the prison to the community for prisoners with a mental illness.

Key selection criteria:

  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Division 1 nurse with endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Extensive and advanced clinical knowledge and at least five years of experience in mental health nursing.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake comprehensive mental health and risk assessments and to plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of nursing in a prison environment.
