Conduct in-depth research and analysis on China's industrial decarbonisation, specifically focusing on the steel sector and international trade. Draft reports, policy briefings, and presentations to communicate evidence-based findings to policymakers, journalists, and stakeholders.
Requires a Master's degree and at least 5 years of relevant research experience, along with fluency in both Chinese and English. Candidates must possess strong analytical skills and deep knowledge of Chinese industrial policy and the green transition.
China is responsible for most of the growth in global CO2 emissions since 2000, and for most of the growth in installed capacity of wind and solar power. The country faces a severe air pollution problem, but has achieved some of the most rapid improvements in air quality on record. Chinese banks are the largest financiers of coal-fired power plants overseas, while the country’s solar manufacturers produce most of the panels installed around the world. In short, for both air pollution and climate change, what happens in China doesn’t stay in China, but is a make-or-break for global efforts.
At CREA, we aim to hold a mirror to these efforts and help both Chinese and international actors track progress and identify problems and solutions.
We are recruiting a China analyst to monitor developments in China’s industrial decarbonisation transition, particularly related to the steel sector. You will keep track of new developments, policies and public debate using official government publications, online sources, social media and professional networks. Assess the dynamics of China’s steel and other industrial sectors, both on the policy and economic levels. Write reports, briefings and articles and give presentations in both Chinese and English to inform decision-makers and the public about the latest trends in clean energy developments.
You will work with a team of analysts and data scientists who provide you with cutting-edge analysis of industrial, energy, air quality, satellite and financial data, and who you will help locate, obtain, and analyse data from Chinese sources.
Conducting in-depth analyses on a variety of topics in China’s industrial decarbonisation in general, and about the steel sector and international trade dimension in particular.
Drafting and conducting research, analysis, and conclusions for research reports and policy briefings.
Developing and presenting policy and technical recommendations for Chinese and international audiences, partners, stakeholders, and existing and potential grant funders.
Coordinating with team members on project implementation and output delivery.
Communicating evidence-based research findings to policy-makers and journalists in areas of China’s industrial decarbonisation in general and in regard to the steel sector and trade in particular.
Good command of Chinese and English (spoken and written).
Master’s degree and/or at least 5 years of relevant work experience in e.g. academic, financial or non-profit research, journalism or other relevant fields.
Strong research and analytical skills with experience in publishing research and commentary.
Strong knowledge of Chinese industrial and steel decarbonisation, economics of the green transition, and implications for climate-related trade measures such as the EU’s CBAM.
Strong data analysis skills and interest in data-driven research.
Strong writing and communication skills to convey complex topics to different audiences in an accessible and fact-based manner are preferred.
Preparedness to work with a distributed global team, with preferred experience working in multicultural contexts.
A team player with high performance and accountability.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects and contribute flexibly in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
This is a remote position that can be based where you are legally allowed to work and be employed by a Finnish organisation, with a preference for London (please note that we are currently unable to hire in North America, Mainland China, and Australia for logistical reasons).
