Full job description

For more than 35 years, EBI Consulting has helped clients solve complex challenges and unlock greater value from their assets. What sets us apart is not only the depth of our technical expertise, but also the breadth of services we provide across the entire building and asset lifecycle. We take the time to understand each client’s unique goals, delivering tailored solutions, actionable insights, and customized reporting that go beyond what traditional environmental and engineering consulting firms typically offer. Position Summary

EBI is seeking a full-time Associate Technical Director to support and help lead our Archaeology and Cultural Resources practice. Working closely with the Technical Director, this role will promote technical excellence, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and operational efficiency across archaeological projects. The Associate Technical Director will provide technical leadership and mentorship to staff, support business development and client engagement efforts, and assist with the continued growth of the archaeology practice. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience managing cultural resource projects under federal, state, and local regulatory frameworks; advanced knowledge of archaeological investigations and reporting requirements; a proven track record of delivering high-quality technical work products; and demonstrated success managing multiple projects and staff concurrently. This position is primarily office-based, with occasional travel for field visits, client meetings, industry conferences, training events, and professional presentations.

This position reports to the Technical Director and is a work from home position, with the potential for infrequent travel. Candidates must already have an established home office and able to thrive in this environment to be considered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Quality Assurance

  • Provide technical guidance and oversight for archaeological and cultural resource projects, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ensure consistency, quality, and timely delivery of technical work products, including cultural resource assessments, archaeological investigations, treatment plans, and agency consultation documents.
  • Oversee project review workflows, monitor project milestones and reporting schedules, and ensure accurate project tracking and documentation.
  • Assist the Technical Director in maintaining and improving report templates, technical guidance documents, quality control procedures, and standard operating practices.
  • Monitor industry regulations, agency guidance, and client requirements, and communicate changes to project teams.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop archaeological staff while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage staff performance, workload planning, productivity goals, annual evaluations, career development, and retention initiatives.
  • Lead recruiting efforts, including workforce planning, candidate evaluation, interviewing, and hiring recommendations.
  • Ensure staff receive appropriate onboarding, technical training, regulatory updates, and professional development opportunities.
  • Partner with the Technical Director to address performance concerns and implement coaching or improvement plans as needed.

Business Development & Client Support

  • Support proposal development, project scoping, budgeting, scheduling, and pricing efforts.
  • Participate in client meetings, agency coordination, professional conferences, and industry events to support business development and client relationships.
  • Contribute to strategic growth initiatives, technical presentations, publications, and thought leadership efforts within the archaeology and cultural resources practice.

Project Execution

  • Serve as a senior technical resource, Principal Investigator, Project Archaeologist, or Technical Reviewer, as appropriate.
  • Author, review, and provide quality control oversight for archaeological reports, technical memoranda, and regulatory documentation.
  • Provide guidance on agency consultation, permitting requirements, Section 106 compliance, tribal coordination, and other cultural resource management processes.

Qualifications and Capabilities

  • Master's Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resources Management, or a related field.
  • Meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Minimum of 6 years of full-time professional archaeological experience, preferably within an environmental consulting or cultural resources management (CRM) environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing archaeological projects and staff under federal, state, and local regulatory frameworks.
  • Principal Investigator qualifications in one or more states preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.
  • Additional state-specific permits, certifications, or qualifications may be required based on project location and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong technical writing, editing, and quality review skills.
  • Thorough understanding of cultural resource management practices, archaeological field methods, and historic preservation regulations, including NHPA, Section 106, and NEPA
