Full job description

We are seeking a Senior Accountant to join our Finance team. This is a hands-on role for a proactive, detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys bringing structure, accuracy, and process discipline to a dynamic global environment.

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for day-to-day general accounting, reporting, and analysis across multiple global entities. The role will take ownership of key general ledger activities, support accurate and timely financial reporting, contribute to budget and presentation materials, and help improve financial systems, processes, controls, and workflows.

This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys both technical accounting and systems/process improvement, and who can partner effectively with Finance, IT, external partners, and other internal stakeholders.

What you’ll do

  • Perform day-to-day and period-end general ledger activities, including journal entries, trial balance adjustments, accruals, deferrals, reconciliations, and account analysis.
  • Take ownership of general ledger accuracy and maintain strong supporting documentation for journal entries, adjustments, accruals, and account balances.
  • Manage accounting operations across areas such as cash and banking, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel expenses, corporate credit cards, and taxes.
  • Create and maintain mandatory and statutory financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with domestic and international regulations.
  • Analyze monthly financial results and contribute to internal reporting, management updates, and presentation materials.
  • Prepare materials for Management, Boards of Directors, Town Halls, and other internal Duke CE events.
  • Provide data to support entity-level and consolidated operating budget development.
  • Collaborate with IT and external partners to support continuous improvement of financial systems and processes, including cloud-based ERP systems.
  • Lead or support ERP implementation, optimization, and systems improvement projects.
  • Maintain documentation of current controls, processes, practices, and workflows.
  • Lead or support internal and external audit engagements, including preparing audit materials, responding to inquiries, and monitoring progress.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve accounting and reporting issues in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes, workflows, automation, efficiency, and performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in corporate accounting and/or public accounting.
  • Experience working with ERP systems required; experience with Microsoft D365 preferred.
  • Experience creating and maintaining financial reports.
  • Strong technical accounting skills, including a strong understanding of debits, credits, reconciliations, accruals, and account analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes, bring structure to complex environments, and strengthen controls and workflows.
  • Professional services industry experience preferred.
  • Must be able to work on-site in our Durham office, if required by the business.

Skills & Competencies

Project Management
Able to set priorities, organize and manage multiple tasks independently, meet deadlines, and follow through with a strong sense of ownership.

Stakeholder Management
Able to communicate effectively across functions and geographies, with a high service orientation and a practical, solutions-focused approach.

Financial Acumen
Strong understanding of US GAAP, with exposure to IFRS. Able to anticipate, identify, resolve, and clearly communicate financial issues.

Technical Proficiency
Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint. Experienced with ERP systems, preferably D365, and able to learn and work across multiple databases and systems.

Analytical Problem-Solving
Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate issues, identify root causes, and recommend practical improvements.

Leaders are the greatest levers for winning in an unpredictable world. They create the conditions for success with customers, employees, stakeholders and society. Duke CE's purpose is to help these leaders get ready for what’s next in the midst of uncertainty. We primarily do this through our custom leadership programs, consistently ranked at the top by the Financial Times and Business Week. Previous experiences, right answers and new content are insufficient in addressing today’s challenges. In some instances, these may actually be counter-productive. Leaders need to have the capacity to understand context and how things work systematically. To do this effectively requires more than simply closing knowledge gaps. It requires a more fundamental reorientation and re-wiring to be successful.
