Student & Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellbeing, connection and belonging, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

Cornell University is an NCAA Division I institution and a member of the Ivy League. The university fields teams in 37 intercollegiate sports and provides a comprehensive physical education program. The university is committed to excellence in academics and athletics, gender equity and diversity in its programs, and a well-balanced, broad-based intercollegiate athletics program. Athletics and Physical Education offers a diverse program of physical and outdoor education, recreational services, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic competition, plus Wellness programs for faculty and staff and fitness centers for the entire Cornell community.

As a part of the SCL Office of the Vice President's unit, the SCL Facilities Management (FM) team supports the student campus experience, by ensuring safe, clean, and operational spaces for students to live, eat, recreate, connect, and engage with each other. With this mission in mind, the team is focused on helping our customers and end-users navigate critical decisions regarding the use and maintenance of their space. They do this through analyzing risks and associated costs, exploring additional services that add value, considering safety and security factors, and ensuring business continuity. Members of this group are passionate about helping customers, think critically about how small decisions can have large impacts, and have a knack for integrating people and physical places. This team is literally the “foundation” upon which the student experience here at Cornell is built.

   

The SO-07 Maintenance Mechanic which is part of the Facilities/Grounds Team for Athletics & Physical Education assists with event preparation and maintenance of the buildings and athletics fields associated with the Athletics department. This position is part of a dynamic, adaptable, fast-paced team trusted with providing services that enhance the safety and experience of student-athletes. The SO-07 Maintenance Mechanic is expected to learn and utilize best management practices for a diverse portfolio of facilities that positively impact students, employees, and the greater Big Red community.

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to growing athletic department needs and expectations, strong work ethic and the ability to carry out tasks and responsibilities with little direct supervision.
  • Possess ability to act professionally, think clearly and critically, and respond swiftly to address unusual and time-sensitive challenges.

Physical Requirements include: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. occasionally and up to 100 lbs. Must be able to reach over your head, and perform various lifting, pulling and pushing operations as well as stand for long periods of time, occasional squatting and bending. Must be able to negotiate stairs, ladders and perform rigorous physical work for sustained periods. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and extremes temperatures for extended periods. Must be free of debilitating dust, pollen or bee allergies, or have the ability to manage such allergy.

Scheduled work hours for this position are 7am-3:30pm on Sunday to Thursday. These hours may be adjusted based on department needs. Flexibility and willingness to work overtime is required.

This position is part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The current rate of pay is listed in the collective bargaining agreement here: https://hr.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/2023-04/uaw.pdf and starts at $28.08/hour.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid unrestricted driver's license.
  • Experience with operating a variety of power equipment (mowers, trimmers, tractors and others).
  • Proficiency in routine equipment and building repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power equipment, turf machinery.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 100 pounds and perform various lifting, pulling and pushing operations.
  • Ability to conduct positive interactions with the general public.
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a college athletics program.
