Summary

American Progress is seeking a Senior Director of Institutional Giving responsible for raising upwards of $10 million in annual revenue from philanthropic foundations and occasionally other sources. In addition to owning a policy-based portfolio of more than 50 current and prospective institutional partners, this role will support the Vice President of Institutional Giving and the Chief Development Officer in securing new funding for American Progress’ new and emerging areas of work.

The Senior Director will work closely with senior policy leaders and executive staff to develop compelling cases for support, identify foundation funding opportunities, conduct relationship mapping, create informed strategies for approaching funders, track cultivation and stewardship activities, and lead the completion of key funder deliverables. This position is ideal for a highly collaborative professional with extensive experience in foundation fundraising and a deep intellectual curiosity about the wide range of policy subject matter covered by American Progress.

Responsibilities

Independently and in collaboration with other Institutional Giving team members, generate upwards of $10 million in revenue on an annual basis through management of a portfolio of more than 50 six- and seven-figure existing funders and prospective opportunities.
Work closely with Development and Policy leadership to craft, execute, and continually revise a clear and measurable institutional fundraising strategy.
Identify new opportunities for foundation funding that align with American Progress’ programs through prospect research, networking, and relationship mapping with senior executives and policy leaders.
Lead cross-functional collaborations to secure support for multidisciplinary projects led by members of the executive and senior leadership teams; ensure high-quality stewardship of these collaborative grants by facilitating intra-organizational planning and coordination to meet grant deliverables.
Research the giving interests of foundation funders and stay abreast of philanthropic trends and recent foundation giving.
Prepare funder materials including but not limited to proposals, concept notes, grant reports, outreach, and presentations. This includes drafting original copy, editing, and formatting as needed.
Lead the planning and execution of meetings with foundation staff; provide strategic guidance and draft briefings for policy and executive leadership in advance of donor meetings.
Liaise with Finance and Legal staff to create budgets and fiscal reports; monitor grant spending; and ensure proper review of fundraising materials and grant agreements.
Track grant requirements and deadlines as well as contact between American Progress and funders.
Perform other duties as assigned or needed to move forward American Progress’ Institutional Giving portfolio.

Qualifications / Requirements

Ten or more years of foundation relations experience or comparable work with foundations, preferably at a nonprofit advocacy or policy-oriented organization, is required.
Demonstrated success managing a portfolio of seven-figure foundation donors.
Strong command of a wide range of tools and strategies for soliciting and renewing contributions from institutional funders.
Ability to digest complex policy subject matter in order to inform clear fundraising strategy for internal use and to develop compelling pitches for funder audiences.
Experience working closely with high-level executives and programmatic and administrative leadership, as well as external colleagues (i.e., program officers).
Track record of providing informal mentorship to junior development staff and/or programmatic colleagues related to institutional fundraising.
Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or equivalent experience is required; relevant advanced degree or certification(s) preferred.
Knowledge of various progressive philanthropic sectors, including climate or international affairs, is desirable.
Knowledge of the Salesforce database is desirable.
Familiarity with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) regulations is a plus.
Ability to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines and manage workflow.
Support for the mission of American Progress and commitment to a broad progressive agenda.

American Progress offers a full and competitive benefits package. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Final salary may be above the posted range commensurate with experience.
