Full job description

Company Description

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) is the only nationally recognized medical specialty society in the United States dedicated to the field of medical genetics and genomics. ACMG publishes a family of peer-reviewed journals advancing genomic medicine worldwide.

Job Description

ACMG is seeking an inaugural Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to lead Genetics in Medicine Translational Genomics (GIM TG), a new open access journal launching in 2027. GIM TG is dedicated to translating genomic discoveries into clinical practice and therapeutics, and will serve as a global forum at the interface of genomics and medicine.

GIM TG is an official ACMG journal and companion to Genetics in Medicine and Genetics in Medicine Open. The inaugural EIC will serve alongside the Editors-in-Chief of the companion journals as part of ACMG's integrated publications leadership team.

Journal scope includes:

  • Clinical and translational applications: medical/clinical human genetics, diagnostics, personalized medicine, and pharmacogenomics
  • Therapeutics: gene therapy and gene editing
  • Research and development: preclinical and non-human studies, biotechnology, bioengineering, and technological developments in biological sciences
  • Computational sciences: bioinformatics and related methodologies

The journal will publish Original Research, Reviews, Commentaries, Case Reports, Clinical Utility Studies, and Methods & Protocols, and welcomes Negative Data.

As inaugural EIC, you will shape GIM TG from launch—defining its editorial voice, building its global editorial community, and establishing it as a high-impact, internationally recognized publication. Candidates with strong networks beyond North America are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership

  • Refine journal scope in collaboration with ACMG leadership and the publisher
  • Recruit and mentor an international Editorial Board
  • Oversee the peer review process, with the assistance of staff
  • Make final publication decisions
  • Commission content, including Special Issues

Growth and Community Building

  • Promote the journal globally at scientific meetings and through professional networks
  • Attract high-quality international submissions
  • Engage ACMG membership and other stakeholders to grow readership, authorship, and editorial participation — particularly among early career researchers
  • Represent the journal at key conferences

Operational Oversight

  • Monitor key performance metrics, including submissions, decisions, and citations
  • Champion open access, author experience, and accessibility

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Strong scholarly record in translational genomics or a related field
  • Peer-reviewed publishing experience, as an author and/or editor
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to build and lead an international team of editors
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate and execute a strategic vision for journal growth and development
  • Commitment to scientific integrity, rigor, and inclusivity in publishing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Editorial experience at a biomedical or genetics journal
  • Active international engagement (Europe, Australia, Asia)
  • Familiarity with open access publishing
  • ACMG membership, or willingness to join

Additional Information

Appointment Terms

This is a three-year, renewable term appointment. The Editor-in-Chief serves ex officio on the ACMG Board. The appointment will be finalized by early fall 2026, with manuscript intake beginning October 2026. Compensation and time commitment will be defined in a formal agreement.

How to Apply

Submit the following:

  • Cover letter (3 pages or fewer) outlining your vision, experience, and approach
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Brief statement on international engagement

Applications will be accepted until September 15, 2026. Candidates are encouraged to apply early, as interviews may begin before the application deadline.

Nominations of colleagues who may not be actively seeking new opportunities are also welcome and may be directed to Human Resources.

Founded in 1991, the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) is the only nationally recognized medical society dedicated to improving health through the clinical practice of medical genetics and genomics and the only medical specialty society in the US that represents the full spectrum of medical genetics disciplines in a single organization. ACMG is the largest membership organization specifically for medical geneticists, providing education, resources and a voice for more than 2,400 clinical and laboratory geneticists, genetic counselors and other healthcare professionals, nearly 80% of whom are board certified in the medical genetics specialties. Four overarching strategies guide ACMG's work: 1) to reinforce and expand ACMG’s position as the leader and prominent authority in the field of medical genetics and genomics, including clinical research, while educating the medical community on the significant role that genetics and genomics will continue to play in understanding, preventing, treating and curing disease; 2) to secure and expand the professional workforce for medical genetics and genomics; 3) to advocate for the specialty; and 4) to provide best-in-class education to members and nonmembers. Genetics in Medicine, published monthly, is the official ACMG peer-reviewed journal. ACMG’s website (www.acmg.net) offers resources including policy statements, practice guidelines, educational programs and a ‘Find a Genetic Service’ tool.
